President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will complete most segments of the Eastern Corridor Road by the end of 2027. He made the announcement on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the grand durbar of the 64th Hogbetsotso Za festival in Anloga.

The pledge answers the Anlo traditional area’s appeal for road projects, and it comes with a start date for the Volivo Bridge over the Southern Volta River, a key link on the route. The project has opened fresh bidding, and President Mahama will cut the sod in the first quarter of 2027.

“This bridge will be a vital link on the Eastern Corridor Road that will connect the southern part of our country to the northern part.”

The Anlo leadership recognised work on the Eastern Corridor Road in its address, and President Mahama replied with a deadline. Government, he told the durbar, will finish most segments by the end of next year. The word “most” matters, because the president did not promise that every stretch will be done within that window.

He named no contractors and gave no figures on cost or the length of road still to be built. Residents along the route will therefore look to the 2027 Budget, which Finance Minister Ato Forson presents next week, for the allocations behind the promise.

Why the Corridor Matters to Ghana’s Economy

President Mahama tied the road to his case that economic recovery must reach ordinary people. A road that links the south of the country to the north cuts the distance between farms, fishing communities and markets. He made that point earlier in his speech with a plain example. “A trader should be able to move goods without excessive cost,” he stated.

The corridor also fits the government’s new economy plan, which targets textiles, garments, commercial agriculture, and hospitality and tourism in the Volta Region. Each of those sectors depends on roads that move goods and visitors quickly.

Volivo Bridge: Sod-Cutting Set for First Quarter of 2027

The Volivo Bridge is the most concrete part of the announcement. President Mahama disclosed that he will personally begin construction over the Southern Volta River in the first quarter of next year, which places the start of work within months of the festival.

The government has opened fresh bidding for the project, so the timeline depends on selecting a contractor. Mahama did not say who will build the bridge, what it will cost or how long construction will take. Those details will decide whether the first-quarter start holds, and whether the bridge is ready to serve the corridor by the end of 2027.

Other Volta Roads Move Alongside the Corridor

President Mahama used the occasion to update the chiefs on roads that run through or beyond the Anlo area. He welcomed the traditional leaders’ acknowledgement of the Kome and Shime road under the Big Push agenda. He reported that work on the Ho-Denu Road is progressing steadily and should be completed by next year.

Procurement is also under way for reconstruction of the road from Central University near Dawhenya to Aflao, a busy route to the border. President Mahama added that the Minister of Roads and Highways, whom he described as a son of the Anlo area, is working to secure a contractor for the Dabala-Savitula-Keta-Denu Highway.

World Bank Feeder Roads Reach Anlo Communities

The President also listed feeder roads captured under the World Bank Feeder Roads Project in the Anlo area. They include Abor to Atiavi, Toko to Gakli, Agbozo-Menkwanta to Ehin, Ajido-Toe to Lente, Toko to Dadeji, Keta to Nolopi Junction and Galusota Junction to Galusota.

Government is about to enter procurement to select contractors for these roads and have them mobilise to site. Feeder roads carry farm produce, fish and schoolchildren, so the list speaks directly to rural incomes and daily life.

The schedule now carries a public deadline. Residents will watch for the 2027 Budget statement to confirm funding, for the award of the bridge contract and for the first sod-cutting in the opening quarter.

If the dates hold, the Eastern Corridor Road could become a continuous route linking the south of Ghana to the north by the end of 2027. If bidding or financing slips, the festival promise will meet the same scrutiny that earlier road timelines have drawn. Anlo and its neighbours now have a calendar against which to measure the government.
