Nkoranza Shooting: Details Are Key And We Need The Details- Kasambata Yaro

Coordinator at the Center for Peace and Security Research at UPSA, Mr. Kasambata Yaro

Coordinator at the Center for Peace and Security Research at UPSA, Mr. Kasambata Yaro, has called on the Police to provide full details of the Nkoranza shooting case.

According to Mr. Yaro, it will be in the interest of public accountability and transparency that the Police makes the details known, especially the part that points to Albert Donkor as an armed robbery suspect before all other issues can be interrogated. “Details are key and we need the details.”

Mr. Kasambata Yaro intimated that the Ghana Police Service has to be forthcoming in its investigations. He averred that the rule of law in investigations is evidence and the Police cannot accuse anyone of a crime unless it has evidence.

“If Albert Donkor was an armed robbery suspect, there should be evidence and by now we shouldn’t be delaying in putting out the evidence that points to fact the that he is an armed robbery suspect.”

Kasambata Yaro

According to Mr. Yaro, the narratives surrounding Albert Donkor’s death has not helped matters so far. He stated that the information which has been released by the Police regarding the issue however, makes the whole case questionable.

“The circumstances surrounding his death is a bit murky and it’s going to take the Police Service to make it a bit more clear for us.”

Kasambata Yaro

Mr. Yaro stated that if the Police clarifies  things, it will as well clear the suspicion built in the interim about the Police personnel being involved in the shooting which led to the protest by the youth.

Mr. Yaro intimated that from the side of the police, some actions are understandable, especially with the handling of the agitated youth. He averred that if the police personnel’s are “boxed” to certain point, they will become demoralized and the nation will be overridden by criminals.

“Negotiating that delicate balance between when a policeman acts with the force that is legally mandated, that force is necessary and justified.”

Kasambata Yaro

Kasambata Yaro however, disagreed with the Polices’ response method of the use of weapons when the protestors were just pelting stones.

Police intelligence questioned

Contributing to the discussion, Security Analyst, Adib Saani, questioned the intelligence the Police in Nkoranza used in arriving at the fact that Albert Donkor was an armed robbery suspect. He also questioned the circumstances under which he was shot while assisting investigations.

“Because from what we understand, they went to his home at 2am, his mother was there, they came in an unregistered vehicle which the family attempted to follow but the Police said no, only for them to hear he has been killed.”

Adib Saani

Touching on the rampage by the Nkoranza youth, Adib Sani intimated that the Police service triggered the youth in going on rampage after it didn’t deliver its mandate to provide details on the issue. He added that the Police rather gave more room for agitation after not meeting the three day probing deadline it promised the youth of Nkoranza.

The Security Analyst asserted that the Police in Nkoranza had an opportunity to prevent the rampage from happening but unfortunately, didn’t utilize it.
