Ghana’s President HE John Dramani Mahama spent his 67th birthday not at a political event or private celebration, but in the company of children on hospital admission—an experience he described as his most meaningful way to commemorate the day.

The President, who turned 67 on November 29, visited the children’s wards of the LEKMA Hospital and the Maamobi Polyclinic together with his wife, First Lady Lordina Mahama. The gesture, according to him, was inspired by a desire to place the country’s young citizens at the centre of Ghana’s development agenda.

In a message shared after the visits, President Mahama expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians for the outpouring of goodwill, noting the many warm wishes he received from his wife, children, government officials, opposition political figures, religious leaders, civil society actors and citizens across the country.

Born in 1958, just a year after Ghana’s independence, the President emphasised that each birthday offers him a moment of reflection about the nation’s journey and the responsibility of leadership.

“Thank you all for the best wishes, prayers, your birthday greetings and cards, and the lovely flowers from Lordina and many Ghanaians,” he wrote. He added that the decision to spend the day with the children was intentional and deeply symbolic.

During the visit, the President and Lordina Mahama interacted with parents and children in the wards, offering them words of encouragement while presenting assorted items and a token of support to the families.

“Seeing the smiles on their little faces reminded me of why the #ResettingGhana must succeed to build a Ghana where every child has access to quality healthcare and the opportunity to thrive”.

Resetting Ghana

The concept of “Resetting Ghana,” which has become a central theme of the Mahama administration, underscores structural reforms across critical sectors such as health, education, governance and infrastructure.

For the President, children remain the most compelling justification for national resets, particularly in the health sector, where access, affordability and quality remain persistent concerns for many families.

President Mahama used the occasion to acknowledge and commend the medical staff at both facilities. He described their dedication as indispensable to the well-being of children and families who depend on public healthcare. “…You are the ones who make the real difference in the lives of these children and their families,” he added.

The LEKMA Hospital and Maamobi Polyclinic, both located within the Greater Accra Region, serve some of the most densely populated communities in the capital.

Staff at the two facilities have, over the years, grappled with high patient loads and limited resources, but their commitment to service has been widely recognised by health authorities and citizens alike. The President’s visit is therefore seen as a morale boost to the medical teams whose daily efforts often go unnoticed.

Sustainable Healthcare Reforms

Beyond the emotional and symbolic significance of the gesture, the visit also reignited public discussions around the importance of sustainable healthcare reforms, particularly for children.

Ghana’s health indicators have shown progress in immunisation, maternal mortality and disease control over the last decade, but challenges remain in achieving equitable access to child healthcare, especially in peri-urban and rural communities.

The Presidential visits to health facilities, while largely symbolic, often help highlight systemic issues and mobilise national attention. For President Mahama, whose message focused heavily on the future of children, the visit also serves as a signal of his administration’s continued prioritisation of social protection policies.

The President’s birthday, though widely celebrated by political actors, religious leaders and ordinary citizens, was ultimately shaped by his own desire to centre compassion and service. The hospital visit has long been a tradition the Mahamas hold dear, reflecting their shared belief in community outreach and philanthropic engagement.

As the country continues navigating economic recovery, healthcare reforms and institutional strengthening, President Mahama’s decision to spend his birthday with hospitalised children reinforced his message that national renewal begins with empathy and deliberate attention to the most vulnerable.

With the #ResettingGhana agenda gaining momentum, the President’s reflections on the smiles of children may well serve as a guiding reminder of what the administration views as the core purpose of governance: building a Ghana where every child has the opportunity to live, grow and thrive.
