Minority Leader And Member of Parliament for Effutu, Honourable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has warned that the NDC Government could intensify the use of misinformation and disinformation as the 2028 general elections approach. He believes such tactics could be used to divert public attention from national issues and what he describes as the government’s failure to deliver on its promises.
In a social media post, Honourable Afenyo-Markin argued that the strategy would involve the circulation of fake news and manufactured distractions designed to shift public discussion away from pressing concerns. The Effutu MP urged Ghanaians to recognise the pattern and remain vigilant as the political season draws closer.
He noted that the use of misinformation as a political tool is not new, insisting that the NDC employed similar tactics while in opposition. According to the Minority Leader, some of the accusations and claims advanced during that period have subsequently been contradicted by facts or exposed as misleading.
The Effutu MP therefore appealed to citizens to question political claims before accepting them as facts. He stressed that voters should remain focused on issues that directly affect their daily lives and the state of the country.
“Every Ghanaian must understand this strategy,” Honourable Afenyo-Markin stated, urging the public to remain alert and refuse attempts to divert attention from important national matters.
He further warned that the anticipated political communication could create distractions as the 2028 election approaches. Consequently, he called on citizens to scrutinise information carefully and distinguish genuine national issues from politically motivated narratives.
For the Minority Leader, the responsibility extends beyond the general public to members and communicators of the New Patriotic Party. He maintained that party officials must be particularly cautious because their responses could determine whether misleading narratives gain traction.
Honourable Afenyo-Markin called for rapid fact-checking whenever false claims emerge. He also urged NPP communicators to respond with discipline and avoid allowing political opponents to determine the party’s agenda.
Additionally, the Effutu MP advised the party to keep public attention on the government’s performance and the everyday challenges confronting Ghanaians. He argued that these issues should remain central to the party’s communication as the country moves towards another election.
Afenyo-Markin Urges NPP To Stay Focused On Bawumia’s Vision
Minority Leader, Honourable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, also urged members of the New Patriotic Party to remain focused on their political message as the party prepares for the 2028 elections. He said NPP members, officers and communicators have a responsibility to ensure that distractions do not derail their campaign objectives.
Honourable Afenyo-Markin stressed the importance of discipline in the party’s communication ahead of the elections. He argued that communicators must avoid being drawn into narratives that could shift attention away from the issues they intend to present to voters.
The Effutu MP specifically called for facts to be checked before responding to claims circulating in the political space. He also encouraged the party’s communicators to expose false information quickly whenever it threatens to influence public discussion.
According to the Minority Leader, the NPP must maintain a consistent message instead of allowing external developments to determine its communication agenda. He believes such an approach will help the party remain focused on the issues it considers important to the electorate.
“Keep the focus on the Government’s broken promises and the everyday problems Ghanaians face,” he urged. The message places the government’s performance and the experiences of ordinary citizens at the centre of the political strategy he wants the party to pursue.
Furthermore, Honourable Afenyo-Markin urged party members to promote Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision for Ghana. He called for the former Vice President’s proposed direction for the country to be communicated with clarity and conviction.
The Minority Leader also linked effective communication to the party’s wider electoral objective. He urged NPP members to work consistently towards securing victory in the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, his appeal places significant emphasis on preparation before the election campaign reaches its peak. By encouraging early vigilance and message discipline, Honourable Afenyo-Markin wants the party to build a communication strategy capable of responding quickly to political developments.
He concluded his message with a four-part call to action for the party. “Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028,” the Minority Leader declared.
