Ghanaian Dancehall and Reggae artist, Samini

Award-winning Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artist, Samini, has shared his reasons for contesting for the SRC President of GIMPA.

For the past weeks, he has been in the media with various opinions and thoughts as to his decision to run for the office of the SRC President of his school. The ‘Iskoki’ hitmaker has finally let the cat out of the bag explaining why he took such a decision.

Speaking in an interview, Samini disclosed that a few students approached him and told him that it was almost time for the SRC elections and asked if he had an interest in running for the SRC President. According to him, he took it into consideration and spoke with a few level-headed people and they all asked him to contest since they had hope that he would win.

Samini further revealed that he did not let his fame and achievements precede him while in school and acted as every student on the GIMPA campus did.

“I am a regular student on campus, my course mates can attest to that, I don’t hold myself too high and I don’t put myself too low either. I just do what I am to do just like any other student on campus”, he noted.

Despite how relevant and newsworthy he is, Samini enrolled in the institute secretly without media attention 3 years ago. When asked whether he was treated distinctly compared to his colleagues he revealed that his course mates did not treat him with any specialty because they knew he was enrolled in the school. However, his other colleagues who were not aware always came up to him with a different treatment.

“It’s just those who don’t know that I am a student who comes up to me wanting selfies and all that but for my course mates they know me and relate to me as they do with others”, Samini said.

Samini was declared President-elect after the elections on Wednesday, June 22, after he and his running mate, Mabel Mensah, garnered 307 of the valid votes cast while his opponent, Theophilus Quartey obtained 212 of the votes.

In celebration of his victory, Samini took to Twitter to thank those who supported him and those who were against his ambition, claiming he didn’t stand a chance.

“Thanks to all who believed and encouraged me to go for the topmost. To my doubters I say a bigger thank you for making me see the need to prove you wrong,” he said in a tweet.

Samini received a ton of congratulatory messages from students, fans, and some colleagues in the showbiz industry. Reacting to Samini’s post on Twitter, rapper Okyeame Kwame indicated that he is impressed with his colleague’s decision to go back to school.

Okyeame Kwame wrote: “Congratulations Slim guy. You are truly resilient. You told me ten years ago that you will go back to school. You didn’t just go, you became SRC Prez. Wow! True mentor”.
