Members Want An Exit From The Medical And Dental Council

President of the Ghana Physicians Association ,Emmanuel Appiah

The President of the Ghana Physicians Association (GPA), Emmanuel Appiah, has stated that the members of his association want an exit from the Medical and Dental Council in order for them to have their own regulatory authority.

According to him, leaving the Medical and Dental Council will bring a halt to all the fights and ‘brouhaha’ that is going on within the association, adding that this situation has put a lot of pressure on the leadership.

“…Because of the kind of thing that the regulator has done, there is nothing that we tell the members about the regulator that they understand. They don’t understand us, everything that you say, they’ll push it out. They are not ready to listen.”

Emmanuel Appiah

The President of the Ghana Physicians Association noted that after the association resumed from their ‘oppression and suppression’, they had to tell their people that they have been put under a new leadership, therefore they have to cooperate.

Increased number of GPA members

According to him, there has been an increase in the number of their members, including students who wrote and passed the Ghana Physicians Council exams and all these people are yet to be cleared financially by the government to be employed into the system.

He indicated that as at last year there were over 800 members in the association so he expects the current membership to be larger.

“Go to the other polyclinics and see, they need the prescribers especially the PAs, but we don’t get them there, because they don’t have the financial clearance.  So, it’s very important that the government set its eyes over there, because the people in our community also need our care.”

Emmanuel Appiah

He explained that physicians were not found only in polyclinics but they were also found in the various health sectors and district hospitals, adding that the managers of these hospitals can attest to the fact that they are in need of prescribers.

The association demanded a new leadership to manage their affairs due to the ‘so called’ unfavorable policies made by the council.
