Parliamentary Primary Election To Replace Late NPP MP To Be Held On Sunday, April 23

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), at its National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meetings held on Monday, April 3, 2023, approved the timelines for holding parliamentary primary election at Kumawu, for the by-election.

The NPP headquarters released an immediate letter on Thursday, April 6, signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, to inform the general public of the opening.

The approved timeline for the opening of Nominations for the position of Kumawu MP, is scheduled for Tuesday April 11, 2023, whiles the closing of nominations is Friday, April 14, 2024. The elections will however, be held on Sunday, 23 April, 2023.

This is to speed up things and have a representative for the Kumawu Constituency in Parliament and also aide the Majority Caucus in its decision makings and voting.

In its release, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stated that: “The party has also approved detailed Rules and Regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election, which would be made available to stakeholders. However, Nomination forms will be made available at the Constituency Party Office for purchase.”

The Sad Death Of the Kumawu Member Of Parliament

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) member of Parliament for Kumawu constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Philip Basoah, died at age 54. He died on Monday, March 27 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he had been on admission for a serious ailment.

Mr. Basoah’s death was confirmed by the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, in a tweet on Tuesday morning, March 28.

Philip Basoah was born on November 18, 1969. He hails from Kumawu in the Ashanti region of Ghana. He had a master’s degree from the Paris graduate school of management in 2012 and also had a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cape Coast in 2000. He also had his GCE A level in 1994, his GCE O level in 1991 and his MLSC in 1986.

He was the project coordinator for Ghana Education Service, in the Ashanti Region. He was also the District Chief Executive at the Ministry of Local Government for the Sekyere East District, from June 2005 to January 2009. He was once a tutor at the Agogo Senior High School.

He was a member of NPP and was the current MP for the Kumawu Constituency in the Ashanti region. In the 2016 Ghana general elections, he won the parliamentary seat with 21,794 votes making 78.2% of the total votes cast, whilst the NDC parliamentary aspirant, Emmanuel William Amoako, had 5,899 votes, making 21.2% of the total votes cast and the CPP parliament aspirant, Opoku Kyei Clifford, had 188 votes, making 0.7% of the total votes cast.

In the 2020 Ghana general elections, he won the parliamentary seat with 14,960 votes, making 51.1% of the total votes cast, whilst the NDC parliamentary aspirant Bernard Opoku Marfo, had 2,439 votes making 8.3% of the total votes cast.

Before his death, he was the Chairperson for the Employment, Social Welfare, and State Enterprises Committee, a member of the Lands and Forestry Committee and also a member of the Selection Committee.

He was mourned by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Members of Parliament, the Presidency, the people of Kumawu and symphatizers. He was dearly loved by those who knew him, as a very good man. He will surely be missed by them that knew him.
