MPs’ Lives Are In Danger When Projects Resume Only During By-Elections– Fred Agbenyo

Assin Central Residents Not Moved By Roads Being Constructed

Road Construction

Fred Agbenyo, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, has stated that it must stop when development projects are only carried out in a certain location, while a by-election is taking place.

Such a practice, in his opinion, endangers the lives of all Members of Parliament (MPs). He explained in an interview on Friday, June 2, that some individuals might entertain the notion that since a by-election is necessary for communities to advance, they ought to assassinate their representative.

When the date of the by-election was announced, some earth-moving equipment have been noticed in the Assin North Constituency in the Central Region, according to Fred Agbenyo.

The much-awaited by-election in the Constituency will take place on Tuesday, June 27, according to the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), which made the announcement on May 31.

On Thursday, June 1, several of the Constituency’s roadways were being rebuilt. Residents there asserted, however, that no amount of “lies” will sway them to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Others are pleased that the by-election’s arrival led to the roads being rebuilt. One person remarked, “We need development, so if it’s coming because of the by-election, we’re happy.”

James Gyakye Quayson has received notice from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that he will continue to be the party’s candidate in the by-election. The party has decided that the expelled MP will win re-election and carry on with his responsibilities.

On the other side, the NPP asserts that it would easily win the elections, just like it did on May 23 in Kumawu.

Assin North Constituency Roads Began In 2020

Ben Effah, the constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Region’s Assin North, denied reports that the government hastily begun building roads there in order to gain support for the approaching by-election.

Over 15 road construction machines have been deployed in various communities within the Assin North constituency in recent days, busy building roads.

According to reports, the heavy machines were sent to the constituency shortly after the court nullified James Gyakye Quayson’s election as the district’s member of parliament, necessitating a by-election. However, some locals have criticized the government because they think the action is designed to influence people to support the ruling party in the next by-election.

Ben Effah, the NPP constituency chairman for Assin North, asserted that the roads’ construction began as early as 2020, before the general election, in a Friday interview.

“It is an ongoing project, there’s no road in Assin North being constructed because of the by-election. The construction machines have been on the roads since 2020, only that the contractor sometimes leaves the site and returns to continue the work only when he’s received some funds.

“The gutters have already been done and the roads filled; we don’t use two weeks to construct gutters on such long kilometres of road. The ongoing development in Assin North dates way back, nothing new is being done. Machines have been on Assin Bereku roads for a long time. It is normal for such projects to be done; nothing extraordinary is being done.”

Ben Effah

He praised the project’s rapid progress and asked the people to reject suggestions that the roads are being built in order to garner support for the approaching by-election.

However, the Assin North by-election will take place on June 27, 2023, as scheduled by the Electoral Commission.
