Ernest Owusu Bempah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) deputy Director of communications, claims that Sammy Gyamfi’s accusations of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the NPP are an attempt by the NDC to mislead voters in Assin North about the EC’s intentions with regard to the upcoming by-election.

“This is a childish strategy; he is a lawyer and he is supposed to know better. That is their strategy to create a certain impression in the minds of the people of Assin North. The NDC has intelligent men and women, they have big lawyers in the party and they allow this statement to come out?

“The NDC has nothing to offer the people of Assin, they were in power but they didn’t do anything for them.”

Ernest Owusu Bempah

Owusu Bempah was responding to Sammy Gyamfi’s claim that the NPP had conspired with the Electoral Commission to add an illegitimate name to the voters’ list; the EC has refuted this claim.

Sammy Gyamfi’s account revealed that “this illegal move is to aid the said Charles Opoku to contest in the NPP Parliamentary primaries  to select a candidate for the upcoming Assin North by-election.”

“Our unimpeachable sources have revealed that contrary to the clear requirement on the nomination form for the Assin North by-election, which demands that a candidate in the election must be a registered voter in Assin North, the said Charles Opoku is not a registered voter in the Assin North Constituency.”

Sammy Gyamfi

However, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) dismissed the claim in a statement; “For the records, the EC has not received any such request from the NPP to transfer the votes of any person. This allegation is false and a figment of the author’s imagination. As usual, it is aimed at maligning the integrity of the Electoral Commission.” The EC also stated that a person does not need to be a registered voter in a particular constituency to enable the individual contest an election the that constituency.

NPP Sure To Win Assin North By-Election

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to Ernest Owusu Bempah, deputy Director of communications, will prevail in the impending Assin North by-election.

He claimed that the NPP has fixed all of the party’s internal issues that led to James Gyakye Quayson, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), gaining the seat in the 2020 elections.

“We are going to win that seat, we have resolved the problems and we are coming out to win,” he stated.

Charles Opoku was overwhelmingly chosen by New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Assin North Constituency on Wednesday, June 7 to represent his party in the June 27 by-elections. In the primary elections held on Wednesday, June 7, Mr. Opoku defeated Frederick Freeman Amoah-Kyei, who received 136 votes, by receiving 397 of the total valid votes cast.

National executives, led by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, attended the primaries at the Church of Pentecost at Akonfodi in Assin Bereku.

Given the abundance of ballots on the electoral officers’ desks, Charles Opoku’s supporters were ecstatic when the ballots were sorted. When the results were announced, they were giddy with excitement and congratulated their candidate.

To ensure that the NPP regains control of the Assin North seat, the two candidates were required to take an oath of fealty before heading to the polls.

James Gyakye Quayson, the ousted member of parliament for Assin North, will now compete against Charles Opoku for the seat.
