Actor Said Mountains Were ‘More Unstable’ In Last Interview

The late actor Julian Sands

Actor Julian Sands, who died in a California mountain range, said in his last UK interview that many friends had stopped going hill-climbing partly because it had become too dangerous.

Six months after he went missing, the British star’s body was found last week.

Speaking late last year, he said:

“Pals I used to climb with have stopped going to the mountains. Partly because they find, with climate change, the rock faces have become much more unstable”.

Actor Julian Sands, who was 64 at the time, said those friends no longer wanted to dedicate themselves to a climb.

He said:

“If you don’t really have the desire, the focus for climbing a route if you’re not absolutely committed, it becomes much more dangerous and it’s a much more deflating experience.

“Finding folk whose company I enjoy in such stressful and intimate conditions is not easy”.

Actor Julian Sands

Julian Sands, best known for the 1985 film “A Room With A View”, went missing on a solo trip to Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains, near Los Angeles, on 13 January, 2023.

Human remains were found by the hikers on 24 June due to the wintry conditions which hampered the search and the remains were later identified to be Julian Sands.

Speaking in an interview, he said ‘The Willows’, a BBC radio drama that was broadcast over Christmas should be promoted.

He said that he was often aware of being present in places where people had lost their lives in the past even though he knew the risks of being in the mountains.

He said:

“If you can deal with dangerous mountains, you can certainly deal with life as an actor – the two are quite complementary”.

The brother of British actor Julian Sands said the tributes paid to his brother have been “overwhelming”.

It was confirmed this week that human remains found in mountains in California were those of Mr. Sands, who went missing on a hike in January.

Nick Sands, who lives in Gargrave, North Yorkshire, said he would “grieve and celebrate” his brother’s loss and life in “equal measure”.

Julian Sands appeared in TV dramas 24 and Smallville.

On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, in the area around Skipton, the 65-year-old had been raised with his four brothers.

Quentin, Robin, Jeremy, and Nick Sands still live in the area and Nick said the last few days had been “overwhelming with the amount of tributes and messages” to his brother.

He said:

“People talk of closure obviously meant kindly, but I prefer to think we can now move on”.

He added:

“We can all celebrate or grieve as we want, but I hope I never have closure.

“I guess I will grieve and celebrate in equal measure and for those of you who knew him you will understand the great loss of an extraordinary brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather”.

Julian Sands lived in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles with his wife, writer Evgenia Citkowitz, with whom he had two children.

Previously, he was married to Sarah Sands, former editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today program, with whom he had a son.
