Vodafone Calls for Economic Empowerment of Women

Preba Greenstreet, Vodafone Ghana’s Legal and External Affairs Director, has highlighted the importance of empowering women, noting that for economic empowerment of women is crucial role in driving economic growth not only in Ghana but also across Africa.

Greenstreet emphasized that women in Ghana and across Africa are not merely participating in business, but are also leading, innovating, and driving economic growth. She further iterated Vodafone Ghana’s commitment to gender equity in the workplace and its active role in promoting education and financial inclusion for women.

Greenstreet highlighted the company’s efforts to prioritize candidates’ skills and capabilities over gender to ensure equal pay and job opportunities. As a partner for the conference, Vodafone Ghana provided financial and digital support to the organizers and offered 10 free website development opportunities for participants to enhance their digital visibility and foster business growth.

Over the years, Vodafone Ghana has demonstrated its dedication to women’s empowerment. In 2019, the company partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to train female farmers in using mobile phone applications like Vodafone Cash, enabling them to save, transact, and access essential banking services. This initiative has connected millions of women to vital financial services.

The Importance of Equity And The Full Involvement Of All Ghanaians

Greenstreet emphasized the importance of equity and the full involvement of all Ghanaians in the nation’s development. She insisted that women must be treated equally as men to promote economic growth.

“Women have just as much right to success as men. This is ‘EQUITY.’ A position advocating for the comprehensive participation of all Ghanaians in our nation’s development should not be controversial or undermined.”

Greenstreet made these remarks during a plenary speech at the 2023 Inspire Me Conference. The Inspire Me Conference, organized annually by Absa Bank, aims to empower female business owners, enhance their leadership skills, and foster the development of successful and sustainable businesses for the future.

As part of the Inspire Me agenda, Vodafone recently partnered Women in STEM-Ghana to inspire young women at a Girls camp in the Ashanti region. The programme formed part of an annual empowerment platform for Girls from 20 Senior High School Girls on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
A total of 200 students took part in the camp session, selected from the Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions. The event was also in collaboration with the Office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The programme has several components including digital coding and mentorship sessions to equip the girls with the requisite skills and confidence to embrace the digital future with confidence and optimism.
