Peter Partey Anti, Executive Secretary of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST – Ghana), has stated that the finance of education in Ghana has many difficulties.

He claimed that this circumstance has compelled headmasters and headmistresses in various schools to adopt creative solutions to maintain the children’s education.

He lamented the fact that education directors do not recognize the work made by administrators at the schools.

The headmistress of the West Africa Senior High School (WASS), Dr. Mrs. Shine Agatha Ofori, was interdicted, and Mr. Partey Anti responded to the situation and said, “The financing of our education is going through serious challenges.”

He emphasized how regrettable it is that many people who have raised concerns have not received the support they require, and as a result, some headmistresses and headmasters are also looking for ways to make sure that they can continue to support the children and give them the necessary kind of education.

“Unfortunately, the managers of our education do not appreciate these gestures, these innovative ideas and ways of solving problems. And therefore, they always see these as illegal.”

Gov’t Must Be Forced To Realize Problems

For his part, Angel Carbonu, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), advised the administrators of the various senior high schools to maintain their distance and let the problems in their institutions unravel.

According to him, this is the only way to get the government to acknowledge and act to address the genuine issues in the schools. He stated that if the heads always take the initiative to handle the problems, the government would believe that everything is well in the schools and will not take any action to fix the real difficulties.

“Sometimes I also blame the heads, they are too enthusiastic to ensure that there is education for the students. I will advise in the current situation; the heads of the schools should also stay aloof.

“Maybe they are not staying aloof enough for the government to see that there is a problem, they are being moved by the need to provide good education and take action that will get them into trouble. We are calling for the reinstatement of the headmistress of West Africa SHS because the problem is bigger than the incident that occurred in WASS.”

Angel Carbonu

The government’s inability to address the issues at the senior high schools, according to Carbonu, is prompting certain heads to take action to ensure that the students’ education continues.

The GES said in a statement announcing the interdiction and signed by the head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, that the Regional Disciplinary Committee has been tasked with investigating the situation and reaching a decision.

Nevertheless, NAGRAT wants the headmistress to return to her post. According to the NAGRAT President, the president of the PTA at West Africa Senior High School (WASS), saw issues with the school and chose to levy themselves, as a result of the inventiveness of the parents.

However, he claimed that the only issue he found in his probe was that the assistant headmaster had issued the that payment of monies be channeled through his mobile money number.
