Kennedy Agyapong’s Campaign Team Clarifies “Showdown” Remark

Kyerematen Claimed To Be The Best Candidate

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s campaign team has clarified that his remark during Saturday’s Super Delegates Conference regarding a “showdown” with President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was not a threat.

Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party, was seen in a viral video, making a phone call, in which he threatened the President and Vice President with a “showdown”, after learning that one of his agents had been attacked in the North East.

His actions caused worry, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) promised to pursue disciplinary measures against the Assin Central Member of Parliament.

Mr Agyapong’s campaign manager, Kwame Owusu, claimed during a news conference that the term “showdown” was just intended to suggest that Kennedy Agyapong will triumph in the elections on November 4, regardless of any alleged intimidation.

“Whether or not the confrontation was directed towards the Vice President or not, are you concerned about the meaning of confrontation? Because I think the showdown is basically a decisive point of either a confrontation or a contest.

“In that regard, if it is addressed to the Vice president it only then meant that come November, no matter what happens, he is going to be a victor. And so, that is a showdown, a decisive confrontation and contest… It is not a threat, it is nothing for us to be worried about, it is just a simple language probably expressed in a different form.”

Mr. Owusu added that Kennedy Agyapong is prepared to assist the party’s disciplinary procedure.

Chairman Wontumi Informed Ken Agyepong Of His Fate

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, claims to have informed Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong of his outcome in the Super Delegates Conference even before voting started.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia received 629 votes, or 68.15% of all valid votes, to win the super delegates conference on Saturday, August 26. Kennedy Agyapong, an Assin Central MP, finished in second place with 132 votes.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kennedy Agyapong was informed of his second-place finish before the start of the event.

“Kennedy, the time I was coming, I told him he will be second. I spoke to Kennedy…He is my brother. I told him he will be second and to me, he is my brother and I will always say the truth.”

Also, Chairman Wontumi noted that the best decision for Kennedy Agyapong would have been for him to run as the Vice President’s running mate. “He should have looked for running mate because Bawumia will beat him,” he said.

He also stated that the combination of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade Minister Alan Kyermaten was now not possible.

Before the recently concluded Super Delegates Conference, Chairman Wontumi supported Mr. Kyerematen as Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. However, in light of the outcomes of the meeting conducted on Saturday, August 25, 2023, he has modified his position.

In the opinion of Chairman Wontumi, Ken Agyapong is most prepared to take on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside the Vice President because he was able to win the second post, which many believed would go to Alan Kyerematen.

“Kennedy is (an) asset and that’s why when I mentioned four people, I mention his name before mine. Everybody is an asset, but if Alan didn’t contest, we wouldn’t be here. Then we were talking about Bawumia-Alan but now that Kennedy is second, we are going to talk about Bawumia-Kennedy. That is the truth.”
