Minority Serves Notice to Police Ahead Of Its #OccupyBOG Protest

Minority Caucus in Parliament has served notice to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service on its intended #OccupyBOGProtest on 3rd October 2023.

In a statement signed by the Minority leader, Honorable Cassiel Ato Forson, the Caucus has written to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command after a meeting the Caucus had with the Regional Police Command today, September 11 2023 on the new route and termination point for its intended #OccupyBoGProtest.

According to the statement, the notice is in line with sections 1, 2 & 3 of the Public Order Act 1994 (Act 491), to inform the Police of the impending public protest by the Minority in Parliament in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations, Progressive Forces and other well-meaning Ghanaians.

“The purpose of this protest is to express our revulsion against the illegal printing of money (about GH₵80 billion) between 2021 and 2022 by BOG for the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government which led to a hyper-inflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022.”

Minority Caucus

The singular act of the Bank of Ghana according to the Minority in Parliament has negatively impacted livelihoods and businesses and pushed over 850,000 Ghanaians into poverty in the year 2022 alone.

As representatives of the Ghanaian people, the Minority in Parliament says it is disgusted by the crass mismanagement and reckless mishandling of the affairs of the Bank of Ghana, which resulted in a gargantuan loss of GH₵60.8 billion and negative equity of GH₵55.1 billion in 2022, with its attendant hardships on Ghanaians.

Given the above, the Minority says it is embarking on a #OccupyBOG protest to express its revulsion towards the many acts of financial malfeasance by the Governor, his Deputies and Directors of the Bank of Ghana as contained in the 2022 Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Bank.

Minority Agrees With Police On New Route

After several discussions with the Police, the Minority in Parliament says its protest march has been scheduled for 3rd October, 2023 between the hours of 8:00 am and 6 pm.

The converging point according to Minority is Obra Spot, where the protest shall commence and follow the agreed route below; Obra Spot – Adabraka – Ridge Roundabout – National Theatre Traffic Light – High Court Complex Traffic Light – Atta Mills Highway – U-Turn to Independence Square.

Due to the disagreement between the Minority and the Ghana Police Service on the route to be used for its protest which was scheduled to take place on September 5 2023, the Accra Regional Police Command applied to injunct the protest at the Accra High Court.

The injunction application which was to be ruled upon by the court on Friday, September 8, 2023, was subsequently adjourned by the court to September 18 over misnomer.

The agreed arrangement between the Greater Accra Regional Police Command and the Minority Caucus in Parliament brought an end to what seemed to have become a legal tussle between the Ghana Police Service and the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
