Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, the Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, has apologized to President Akuffo Addo and the New Patriotic Party for her extended absence from parliament.

The former minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection issued an apology to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the controversy she sparked during her protracted absence from parliamentary responsibilities in a video broadcast on Facebook on September 14.

She expressed sorry for her inappropriate acts and accepted them, citing personal difficulties.

She expressed her regret to the party hierarchy, the legislative leadership, President Akuffo Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the Chief of Staff, as well as her constituents.

“It was not my intention to disrespect you. There was a lot going on in my life and family. I’m using this medium to plead for your forgiveness in the name of God.”

Reactions Of Constituents

Meanwhile, there seem to be divided reactions from her constituents about the apology of the Member of Parliament.

Some of the constituents have indicated that although the apology is accepted, she will not be considered for the parliamentary election in 2024 while admitting that no one can stop the Member of Parliament from contesting, but they believe the delegates would have the final say.

According to some of the constituents, the party has enough men and women to represent the constituency, adding that they are tired of hearing the constituency’s name being mentioned in the news for the wrong issues.

On the other hand, some sections of the constituents suggested that the Member of Parliament should be pardoned and given another chance.

The Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament was dragged before the Privileges Committee of Parliament last year with some members of the Majority Caucus calling for her seat to be declared vacant.

However, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, deferred his ruling on the Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, who was  being cited for absenteeism.

It was up for debate whether the Dome Kwabenya seat should be declared vacant after Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo ignored the Privileges Committee’s summons after it took her absence into account.

Mr. Bagbin stated that he required more time to submit a formal decision following a discussion on the report by the Privileges Committee.

It could be recalled that the Former Minister for Gender and Social Protection and Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya was absent from official duty both as a member of Parliament and Minister of State for almost a year.

It was within the same period that the Majority Caucus in parliament needed her presence in Parliament to pass the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy).
