Alan Kyerematen Bemoans NADMO Inadequacies

Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen

The leader of the Movement for Change and Independent Presidential aspirant for the 2024 general election, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has expressed grave concerns about the inability of the government to resources the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to provide the necessary assistance to citizens during emergencies.

Addressing residents and victims of the Akossombo and Kpong dams’ induced floods, the former Trade and Industry Minister indicated that the flooding incident should serve as a wake-up call for the government to adequately resource NADMO, and invest in early warning systems.

According to Mr. Kyerematen if the National Disaster Management is fully resourced it would be in the position to deliver its mandate of providing relief assistance and support to victims in any form of disaster or national emergencies.

The Independent Presidential Candidate for the 2024 general elections, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, toured some of the communities in the lower Volta bank that were affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage.

According to Mr Kyerematen, his visit was in fulfilment of his earlier promise to the people of the Region during his campaign to be the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to step into the shoes of the late President Jerry John Rawlings, and be their ‘Godfather’.

Addressing a gathering of traditional authorities of the Mepe Traditional Area, Mr. Kyerematen expressed regret about the unfortunate flooding that has affected over 23 communities along the lower Volta Lake in the North, South, and Central Tongu Districts in the Volta Region.

He expressed deep concern at how households belonging to the poor had been submerged by the spilt water from the dams’.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Education, John Ntim Fordjour, has given assurance that measures are being put in place to mitigate learning losses occasioned by the floods.

This follows the disruptions of academic activities in the aftermath of the spilling of the Akosombo and Kpong dams’.

According to the Assin South Member of Parliament, the Ministry of Education is focused on ensuring that a conducive environment is created in the affected areas for school-going children.

“We are going to continue deliberations from our fact-finding report we obtained from all the assessments that have been done. Considering all the brilliant ideas that stakeholders have suggested, we will arrive at something workable and appropriate to ensure that the learning losses that may be occasioned by the flooding and this disaster are mitigated to a large extent. Whatever custom-made approach we need to make within the shortest possible time, we will ensure that learning environments are created in affected areas. That is what our focus is on.”

The Deputy Minister of Education further stressed that despite the flooding situation in the affected communities, academic activities are still ongoing except for some few communities that were severely hit by the flood.

He indicated that the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and all stakeholders will together design strategic measures to mitigate the disruption of the flood on academic activities in the affected communities.

“At this moment, it will be very early to arrive at a specific option, because you have a combination of options that may work for certain parts of the affected areas. There will be some decisions that may not be prudent for certain parts of the affected areas. So whatever comprehensive plan that we are going to put in place in the long term, will be a combination of some of these options that we are considering. All these are very viable and tenable suggestions that we are taking all in good faith.”
