Majority Leader Hints At Parliament Considering Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

The Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has indicated that Parliament would consider the ‘Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022’ before it goes to recess.

The Member of Parliament for  Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region in an engagement with the media stressed the significance of Parliament in dealing with the ‘Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022’ ( LGBTQ+ Bill ).

According to him, the leadership of Parliament in collaboration with the Speaker of Parliament would discuss the appropriate time for the bill to be considered.

“If we are not able to deal with it this meeting, we have to deal with it in the early part of the next succeeding meeting, which will be the First Meeting of the Fourth Session”.

Again, the Majority leader in Parliament indicated that there are almost ninety bills that are under the consideration of Parliament during its last meeting of the year 2023.

According to him, top among the consideration of the house is the Appropriation Bill, Affirmative Action Bill, the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022, a bill regulating vaccine production, and one overseeing the activities of the University of Local Governance and Development among others.

The ‘Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022’ seeks to uphold traditional Ghanaian family values while regulating LGBTQ+ activities in the country.

After being adopted by the House, the bill is now being considered and will go through a third reading before being passed into law.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, led a bipartisan group that introduced the bill in Parliament.

Several members of parliament have supported the passage of the bill to law, arguing that it will solve public health issues related to LGBTQ+ activities.

Parliament Summons Interior Minster On Sege Shooting

Meanwhile, Parliament has summoned the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Derry to appear before the House and provide further details regarding the recent shooting incident in Sege, Greater Accra Region, which resulted in the unfortunate death of one person.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu who chaired the proceeding of the House requested that the Interior Minister should appear before the House during the first week of December to provide updates on the matter.

According to the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu the Minister’s address to Parliament must contain the identity (ies) of the individual (s) who fired the gunshot that resulted in the unfortunate event.

“I will direct the Minister for the Interior to brief the House about the incident, detailing how the violence transpired, and identifying those responsible for firing into the crowd, whether it was the police, the security forces, or individuals associated with the private company”.

Additionally, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament indicated that Parliament would allow the Committee of Defense and Interior to conduct its independent investigation on the unfortunate event after the briefing of the Minister of Interior upon consideration.

The orders of the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament come after the reaction of the Member of Parliament for Sege, Christian Corleytey Otuteye condemning the shooting on the floor of the House.

The shooting incident in Sege in the Greater Accra Region which has left one person dead and several others injured was caused by a renewed feud between the residents and Electrochem Ghana Limited on Monday, November 6 2023.
