The Deputy First Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Joseph Osei-Owusu has revealed that an initial conversation between the leadership of the New Patriotic Party and the flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia confirmed that the party’s running mate would come from the Ashanti Region.

The six-time Member of Parliament for the New Patriotic Party reiterated the need for the New Patriotic Party leadership and the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to consider the party’s running mate for the 2024 general election from the Ashanti Region.

According to the Bekwai Member of Parliament who has been tipped among other members of the party in the Ashanti Region for the party’s running mate position, it would be easier for the New Patriotic Party to secure victory in election 2024 if it picks its running mate from the Ashanti Region.

He further explained that the selection of a candidate from the Ashanti region would give the people in the region confidence that the New Patriotic Party values their immense contribution to the growth and success of the party.

“It is generally agreed in the party that if Bawumia wins, his running mate should come from the Ashanti region. I agree that the person must come from the Ashanti region because, in our party’s dynamics, it would help a lot to select from the Ashanti region”.

Again, the First Deputy Speaker further indicated that the Vice President and the party’s flagbearer, Dr  Mahamudu Bawumia had earlier consented to the decision for the party to pick its flagbearer from the Ashanti Region.

The Bekwai legislator asserted that the party must consider a running mate who possesses key principles and values such as integrity and someone who is revered by the rank and file of the party to compliment the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections.

He noted that aside from the group of people known in the public domain for lobbying for the running mate position of the New Patriotic Party, other groups of people are also being considered for the running mate position.

“They aren’t the only group of people who are eligible to be nominated and I think that the field is wide”.

Moreover, Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu urged the New Patriotic Party leadership and interested parties in the running mate position to give the Vice President and the Party’s Flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia enough room to choose the best candidate for the party.

According to the First Deputy Speaker, even though he is been tipped to be the running mate to the Vice President and the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections, it would be very helpful if the Vice President is allowed by the party’s leadership to make his choice of the running mate.

Meanwhile, Sammi Awuku Esq. the Campaign Coordinator of the Vice President for the New Patriotic Party Presidential Primaries has refuted claims suggesting that the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has commenced the process leading to the selection of his running mate.

According to him, the Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia is an ‘extremely analytical person’, hence he will consult broadly on the choice of his running mate.

He noted that the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would therefore communicate his choice and decision of his running mate to the public when he concludes all discussions with the relevant stakeholders.

“For now, let me issue a disclaimer. The Vice President has not discussed with any member of his inner team or bigger team about his choice that he would be recommending to the National Council”.
