An Economist and Political Risk Analyst, Dr Theo Acheampong has lauded the National Democratic Congress Flagbearer for the 2024 general elections John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy proposal.

According to Dr Theo Acheampong, the 24-hour economy policy proposal by Former President John  Dramani Mahama has a great potential to create jobs which would increase productivity in the country.

He noted that the 24-hour economy policy if fully implemented with appropriate measures and strategies by the government could boost economic growth leading to national development.

“The idea of a 24-hour economy is laudable and I make no exceptions or mince words about that. The devil of course is in the details and what exactly we want to attain by it. But if you come from the fundamental premise that you want to create more jobs and expand the economic basket, then allowing more Ghanaians to work either during the day or at night on rotation shift is laudable”.

Dr. Theo Acheampong

Again, Dr Theo Acheampng expressed confidence in the 24-hour economy policy proposal by Mr Mahama, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections potentials to help reduce the country’s rising unemployment rate, particularly among the youth.

NDC MP Chastises VEEP Over His Attack On Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy Policy Proposal

Meanwhile, Honorable George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Cape South in the Central Region has chastised the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his criticism of Former President John Dramani Mahama’s 24 hour-economy policy initiative.

According to the Former Deputy Minister of Finance under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress administration, the Vice President’s dismissal of Mr Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy proposal was not appropriate.

The Cape Coast South lawmaker further asserted that the digitalization policy and project being pushed by the Vice President under the New Patriotic Party administration could help drive the 24-hour economy policy proposal.

“It is unfortunate when I heard Dr Bawumia as someone of his intellect being an economist arguably claiming to be the father of digitalisation would have seen that the tools that he has been championing itself are enablers for the 24-hour economy, and therefore digitalisation itself is not the ultimate goal”.

George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan

Mr Ricketts-Hagan thus admonished Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to desist from further attempts to dismiss policies announced by Former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 general elections.

However, Nana Akomea, the Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC) and a  member of the communications team of the ruling  New Patriotic Party (NPP)has stated that Ghana’s economy already operates the 24-hour economy.

Reacting to Former President Mahama’s idea of a 24-hour economy, Mr Akomea stated that there is no legal or social barrier for any business that wants to operate for 24 hours, adding that it is the presence of opportunity or demand that would ensure the full operationalization of the 24-hour economy in the country.

“As we speak, our economy has no time limit. Businesses operate up to 6 pm, some operate up to 10 pm, and some operate up to 6 am depending on the opportunities that are available”.

Nana Akomea

Moreover, the State Transport Corporation (STC) Managing Director argued that although there is a 24-hour economy, there is still a need to improve public service delivery to increase the economic prospects of the country.

According to Mr Akomea, to support businesses to operate within 24 hours a week, the government must provide a better street lighting system in the country.
