The National Youth Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Henry Nana Boakye has expressed disappointment over former President John Dramani Mahama’s statements undermining the credibility of the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination 2023 result.

Lawyer Henry Nana Baokye in Facebook post on Friday, January 12 2024 also refuted the former President’s claim that Ghana has withdrawn from the West Africa Examination Councils system for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to Lawyer Hnery Nana Boakye, such statements from former President John Dramani Mahama are unbecoming of him as a statesman.

“It’s disturbing and unfortunate to hear Former President Mahama always making wild allegation and unguarded statements. There is no credible evidence substantiating his claims that Ghana has withdrawn from WAEC system for the WASCCE yet he spews with so much confidence on such a subject when he knows very well he’s ill informed.

“Worst of it all is another claim made by him zeroing all the efforts by students and alleging that they [students] are allowed to cheat resulting to their sterling performance over the years. This is a big insult

Lawyer Henry Nana Boakye

Lawyer Nana Boakye thus urged the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, Mr Mahama to verify his facts before making public statements, particularly given his status as a former leader of the country.

The ruling New Patriotic Party National Organizer further underscored the need for former President John Dramani Mahama to recognize and commend the hard work and brilliance of Ghanaian students rather than casting doubt on their achievements.

He emphasized that Ghanaian students deserve a fair chance for school admission across the continent.

In a recent public address, former President John Dramani Mahama alleged that Ghana had withdrawn from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) system for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

However, Former President John Dramani Mahama’s claims have sparked controversy and drawn criticism from various quarters particularly from some officials of the ruling New Patriotic Party , with some calling for more accuracy and responsibility from the  former President.

According to the majority of Mr Mahama’s critics, Mr Mahama’s statements could have far-reaching consequences and undermine the reputation of Ghana’s education system, particularly with his assertion that students were allowed to cheat, attributing their stellar performance over the years to such practices.

NDC Urged to Specify FSHS Policy Alternatives Instead of Stakeholder Forums

Meanwhile, the Executive Director for Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has challenged the National Democratic Congress flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama to provide specific details about his proposed alternative policies on the review of the free senior high school policy instead of opting for stakeholder forums.

Mr Kofi Asare in media interview emphasized the importance of concrete proposals rather than broad discussions, urging the National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer former President John Dramani Mahama to articulate their stance on the policy change of the free senior high school policy.

“Come up with what any keen observer, participant, analyst in the education space, including the minority leaders in the education sector will appreciate. The stakeholders have raised these concerns in the last seven years. NDC is corporate of these concerns. They should tell us what they will do”

According to Mr Asare, the National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer’s suggestions of a stakeholder forum before they could proffer alternative policies to the free senior high school policy gives an impression of lack of appreciation for the specific modifications required to enhance the existing policy on their part.

He therefore demanded that the National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer former President John Dramani Mahama outline it alternative policies that would address the numerous concerns that have been  raised by various stakeholders about the free senior high school policy over the past seven years
