Safo Newman Reveals How ‘Akokoa’ Became An Overnight Hit

New Ghana music sensation, Safo Newman

New Ghana music sensation, Safo Newman has revealed that he used to do music alone until he created a team comprising “the pure hearts”.

According to the music star, these individuals are those who liked the music from the start, when he was unknown to the public.

“They were not sharing it just because they know [me],” the singer-songwriter further added.

Hailing from Sekyere Kwamang, Ashanti Region, he highlighted fellow natives Kwesi Plus and Smooth Beats as two record producers he has worked with from the start – the former engineered his debut album, Early Music. “Both Kwesi Plus and Smooth Beats are from Sekyere Kwamang,” he noted.

He also noted one of the major members is Mr. Kwame Larteh who has been very good to him and also likes his music very well.

“Akokoa”, produced by Smooth Beats and released in November 2023, has received immense industry endorsement from music bigwigs like sound engineer Da Hammer and rapper Sarkodie.

Talking about Sarkodie’s endorsement, Safo Newman revealed it was news to him, but he was not too surprised because ‘Akokoa’ is a good product.

Star producer WillisBeatz has also given it a surprise Amapiano remix.

In the Highlife/Hiplife song, Newman lamented the torture foster children go through at the hands of those they are trusted with. He rebuked culprits for being passionately religious, and yet so ruthless and apathetic towards vulnerable people.

According to Newman, Akokoa (Child) became a hit through the benevolence of Mr. Kwame Larteh.

“He funded the promotion through bloggers who posted my videos, and my links, and then it reached a wide audience, and then people started seeing that [I’m] good and they started sharing [it also],” he said.

“I’m also grateful to God for letting it come out and strengthening me not to give up because doing a lot of songs and then seeing no progress, is not easy,”  he said after thanking all his supporters.

At publication time, his Akokoa is the fifth biggest song in Ghana on Apple Music.

Talking About Debut

According to the Singer-songwriter, Safo Newman, his music journey started in 2019.

He explained that was when he released a song for the Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL).

Revealing it was a song titled Brofo (English), Newman maintained he did it for patriotism’s sake and approached BGL with it.

“BGL is responsible for promoting our culture – the language aspect,” he noted.

“Brofo decries how we cherish the English language above the local dialects and how we are losing how fluent we are in our country’s dialects,” he explained.

He cited how it is common for Ghanaians to “intersperse” conversations in local languages with English due to a lack of command of indigenous languages.

Singer-songwriter Safo Newman noted that when he created Brofo and gave it to the BGL, he was doing everything alone, and without a team.

“When they accepted it [Brofo], I became excited and did another one for National Commission on Culture, that is [the song] ‘Made in Ghana’,” he revealed.

He explained, that “Made in Ghana”, was about the xenophilia for foreign goods above our products, the indigenous products, the traditional ones we have here.

He credited his sense of patriotism to his upbringing and growing up outside the city. “I didn’t grow up in the city, here. The city has a Western influence a lot. But in the villages, the culture is still intact there,” he said.

Safo Newman propounded that he is a career technology junior high school (JHS) teacher at Cosmos Basic School in Lapaz. He explained career technology is pre-technical skills rebranded.
