Artists Questions Awards Board

Sista Afia

Musician Sista Afia has taken to social media to express her disappointment and frustration for not getting nominations at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

In a heartfelt post, Sista Afia questioned whether she had offended someone on the high table of the TGMA, particularly given the success of her song ‘Asuoden’ in 2021.

Despite its popularity, she received no nominations, leaving her disheartened and questioning the award board.

“Have I offended someone at the high table Ghana Music Awards ?? The fact that Asuoden was a big song in 2021 zero nominations which I still don’t get. I learned people don’t even file for nominations but get nominations, the downplay on my efforts ever since I started doing music in Ghana hasn’t been fair to my craft.

“And yes it hurts because I work so hard. I’ve been quiet for so long because I have respect for the scheme and I don’t want to step on no one’s toes.”

Sista Afia

Despite back-to-back hit songs she has recorded since she joined the music industry almost a decade back, Sista Afia has just a few awards to her credit.

Meanwhile, her fans have taken over her comment section to send her reassuring messages about her value and unbeatable contribution to the industry.

Sista Afia, so far is not the only musical artist who questioned TGMA boards about the reason for not getting a nomination for the Ghana Music Awards.

Ghanaian rap sensation, Derrick Sarfo Kantanka, professionally known as Amerado questioned the organizers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Charterhouse, why they failed to nominate his hit song, “Kwaku Ananse”.

Amerado bagged two nominations on the night of the announcement for nominees for this year’s awards. His [Amerado] “Kwaku Ananse” Remix earned a place in the best collaboration category while “The Hardest” his single, earned a place in the best rap performance. However, the original version of his popular tune “Kwaku Ananse” failed to earn a nomination.

In a tweet on X, the versatile rapper could not comprehend why regardless of the popularity of his song, it did not earn a nomination in any category.

Also, Ghanaian musician Chief One, who hails from the Volta Region of Ghana, took to his Facebook wall to express his disappointment after his song “TOYOTA” failed to secure a nomination for the Best Afrobeat Song of the Year category at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

In his post, Chief One humorously questioned the decision of the board and academy of the award scheme over their failure to nominate his song.

He implied that there might be an undisclosed reason why his song was not nominated.

Robert Klah Addresses Concerns Regarding Absence From Nominations

Robert Klah, Head of Public Events and Communications for the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, urged Ghanaian singer and songwriter Sista Afia to contact the organization to address any concerns she may have regarding her absence from the list of nominees for the 2024 event.

Robert Klah insisted that all due processes concerning nominations were being followed by the organizers of the scheme.

He mentioned that contrary to her claims, Sista Afia hadn’t offended anyone at the scheme. Thus, no unfair treatment is being meted out on her.

“Sista Afia can always reach out to me. I am always accessible. I don’t think she has stepped on anyone’s toes as far as I am concerned. The same process we follow to nominate artists is the same thing we are doing,” Robert Klah said.

Robert Klah also debunked claims by Sista Afia that some artists secure nominations without even applying.

“It is not entirely true that people do not file for nominations and yet they get nominated. We have a research team who in some cases include certain songs that merit nomination. And even with that, we contact the artist first,” he said.

The Head of Public Events and Communications for the TGMA called on all artists who may have any concerns regarding their nominations to reach out to his outfit for clarification.
