Government Fails In Supporting The Creative Sector – David Osei

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei has evaluated the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s performance during its nearly eight years in power, assigning them a rating of seven out of ten.

According to him, regardless of COVID-19 challenges the government has done creditably well.

However, Prince David Osei believes that the Akuffo-Addo government has not performed as well when it comes to the creative arts industry.

He expressed his longstanding concern regarding the insufficient focus on the creative sector by the government.

“I’ve always been saying that enough attention is not being paid to the creative sector, and the ministers and the deputy ministers and the people who are part of us that we put in place of authority are not doing much. I believe the creative arts (industry) should be well-equipped. We should get more of the national cake.”

Prince David Osei

The government’s failure to support the creative sector can have far-reaching consequences on the economy, culture, innovation, societal well-being, and a nation’s global presence.

The creative sector, which includes areas such as arts, culture, film, music, and design, contributes significantly to the economy. It generates jobs, fosters innovation, attracts tourists, and drives economic growth.

However, without proper government support, the sector struggles to thrive, leading to job losses, reduced economic output, and missed opportunities for growth.

Governments must recognize and prioritize the importance of this sector and provide the necessary support to foster its growth and resilience.

Also, the actor [Prince David Osei] stated that there is a huge misconception that people in the arts do not contribute as much to the country’s development but from the work they do, the creatives also pay their quota to the country.

The actor also highlighted their role in providing entertainment and therapeutic value to the public, emphasizing the importance of respecting and investing in the creative arts.

“Until we start respecting the creative arts and paying attention to them, we are not going to be benefiting as much as we are supposed to. This is because a lot of people tend to look down on actors, and musicians, but we have the platform and we have the numbers. We can convince the people, persuade the people to cause great change in governance, and also get involved in the political discourse.”

Prince David Osei shared his thoughts about the recent intermittent power outages faced in Ghana, however, attributing it to that of ‘faulty machinery’.

The actor, who was one of the front runners in the 2015 #DumsorMustStop# campaign during the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, admitted to experiencing the recent outages, stating, “We all felt it.”

He cited the case of a recent power outage in Toronto and Canada.

“The whole downtown Toronto, Canada, went off currently. There was a blackout. So once you’re dealing with machines, things can fall,” he said.

Prince David Osei also referred to a publication by the Electricity Company of Ghana that the country has a stable national power supply and that the power outages were due to ‘localized faults’.

“That’s what it said. That if you’re experiencing an outage in your area, call a certain number. It could be a fault within your neighborhood. If there’s a problem, then you tell the people. You tell them ahead of time that there is a problem. We’re facing certain challenges, so this and this will happen.”

The actor speaks as Ghanaians in many parts of the country experienced incessant power cuts without warning which caused disruptions to businesses and the daily activities of citizens.
