The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has commended the party’s flagbearer former President John Mahama for his transformative impact on Ghana’s sporting landscape.

Mr Kwetey, further noted that the former President’s dedication to sports development served as a cornerstone of his legacy, with projects and initiatives championed by his administration becoming a yardstick that elevated the country in the global stage of athletic excellence.

“Today, let’s reflect on HE John Mahama’s impactful contributions to Ghanaian sports. As a true nation builder, his dedication to sports transcends infrastructure, fueling progress and fostering a stronger, more united Ghana”.

Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC’s General Secretary

He began by stating that at the forefront of Mr Mahama’s sporting initiatives stand two monumental projects, which include the Cape Coast Stadium and the Trust Sports Emporium in Bukom.

The opposition National Democratic Congress General Secretary posited that the Cape Coast Stadium which boasts of a 15,000-seat capacity, stands as a testament to Mr Mahama’s vision of creating versatile, multi-purpose venues that serve as hubs for athletic prowess and community engagement.

He indicated that the facility was equipped with outdoor basketball courts, a handball court, a boxing training court, and state-of-the-art facilities including audience emergency rooms, and guestrooms, and athletic lounges, making the stadium a beacon of sporting infrastructure in West Africa.

Furthermore, the former Member of Parliament for Ketu South in Volta Region stated that the Trust Sports Emporium in Bukom which was equally built by former President John Dramani Mahama while in office stands as a symbol of modernity and excellence in sports facilities in the country.

He noted that with its 800-seater sports auditorium, a two-storey block dedicated to aerobic, physiotherapy, and gym facilities, a 300-seater conference hall, and a 4000-seater open-air arena, the emporium continue to provide a conducive environment for athletes to hone their skills and compete at the highest level.

Mr Kwetey further argued that these projects, far from being mere constructions, have catalyzed a paradigm shift in Ghana’s sporting development over the past decade.

According to him, these sporting facilities have not only provided world-class venues for athletes and spectators but also positioned Ghana as a regional and international events hub, thereby stimulating sports tourism and bolstering the country’s economy.

Sports Beyond Infrastructure

Moreover, the opposition party’s chief scribe stated that former President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to sports extends beyond infrastructure.

He noted that the party’s flagbearer’s investment in various sporting disciplines yielded remarkable results, as evidenced by Ghana’s record-breaking haul of 19 medals in the 2015 All-Africa Games held in Brazzaville, Congo.

Mr Kwetey also noted that Mr Mahama’s tenure witnessed historic triumphs in the area of football, such as Ghana’s memorable victory in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in Egypt, where the Black Satellites emerged triumphant over football giants Brazil.

In addition, Mr Kwetey mentioned that the achievements of Ghana’s Black Queens in the Africa Women’s Championship (AWC), securing third place by defeating South Africa, underscore Mr Mahama’s commitment to gender equality in sports and his efforts to empower female athletes.

He stressed that such victories did not only galvanized national pride but also ignited a passion for football and other sporting disciplines across the country, inspiring a new generation of athletes to strive for excellence

Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress concluded his argument by emphasizing that projects like the Cape Coast Stadium and the Trust Sports Emporium in Bukom are not merely about buildings but about fostering unity, talent development, and national pride.
