10 Presidential Aspirants Form ‘Grand Coalition, Ghana’

A man casting his Vote

In a significant development ahead of the December 7, 2024, Presidential elections in Ghana, a coalition of Presidential aspirants, each representing their political entities, have announced to form ‘the Grand Coalition, Ghana’ to contest the upcoming elections.

This move marks a departure from the traditional two-party system that has dominated Ghana’s political landscape, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) being the main contenders in recent years.

“This Grand Coalition is being formed in recognition of the urgent need to save our nation for current and future generations. Individually, the under-listed Presidential Aspirants have worked diligently to change the political landscape of Ghana. As the election of December 2024 draws closer, separately and in joint discussions the undersigned aspirants are committed to a legal democratic revolution to save our Nation.”

Mr. Isaac Boafo, Public Relations for Grand Coalition, Ghana

The announcement of this coalition comes as Ghana prepares to elect a new President, following President Nana Akufo-Addo’s completion of his second term in office. This election will mark Ghana’s fifth Presidential succession since the return to democratic multiparty politics in 1992, further cementing Ghana’s reputation for institutionalized and rules-based Presidential transitions.

The coalition’s formation underscores the diversity and competitiveness of Ghana’s political landscape, with each aspirant bringing their unique political ideologies and platforms to the table.

This coalition includes notable figures such as Jacob Osei Yeboah, Akwesi Addai Odike, Dr. Samuel Worlanyo Mensah, Akosua Kunmankumah Darkwah-Sarpong, Kofi Koranteng, Tawaih Nkrumah Hemans, Richmond Owusu Frimpong of New Ghana Movement (NGM), Kenneth Kwame Asamoah of Action People’s Party (APP), Owuara Ntim Agyarko of People’s Liberation Front (PLF), and Edward Ohene Kye of Begin Ghana Party (BGP).

The coalition’s formation adds an element of unpredictability to the upcoming elections, with each aspirant bringing their own set of policies and visions for the country. This development is set against the backdrop of Ghana’s democratic institutions, which have been praised for its professionalism, independence, and integrity, as well as the vigilant and well-organized civil society that has played a crucial role in electoral reforms and enhancing trust in the electoral process.

The Grand Coalition announced today that it will hold a ‘Convention of Purpose’ from 13th to 15th April 2024 at the University for Development Studies (UDS) Guest House in Accra. The convention’s theme is ‘Coalition to Save Ghana: Patriotism, National Agenda, and Progress.’

“The undersigned Presidential Aspirants have a vision of purpose to create a new accountable government that will guide Ghana into a prosperous hardworking future. Each is committed to working for the hope, dreams, prosperity, and freedom of all Ghanaians.”

Mr. Isaac Boafo, Public Relations for Grand Coalition, Ghana

The Grand Coalition highlighted that all Presidential Aspirants, Movement Leaders, and Statesmen desirous of saving Ghana, formulating a national agenda, and creating a nation of hope for current and future generations are expected to participate in this historic Grand Coalition and conference.

The coalition’s formation could prompt discussions and debates on electoral reforms, including the need for a more competitive and democratic electoral system. This could lead to calls for reforms aimed at reducing the dominance of the two-party system and ensuring a more level playing field for all political entities.

On a broader level, the coalition’s emergence could be seen as a step towards democratic consolidation in Ghana, by bringing together various political entities and ideologies. The coalition could contribute to the development of a more pluralistic and democratic political system. This could enhance the country’s democratic governance and strengthen its democratic institutions.

As the country prepares for this pivotal moment in its political history, the coalition’s formation represents a testament to the resilience and diversity of Ghana’s political landscape. It will be interesting to see how this coalition navigates the challenges ahead and how it shapes the political discourse and the outcome of the 2024 Presidential elections in Ghana.
