former Ghanaian international Laryea Kingston

In a move set to inject new vigor into the Ghanaian football at the youth level, the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially appointed former Ghanaian international Laryea Kingston as the head coach of the national Under-17 team, the Black Starlets.

The confirmation of Kingston’s appointment heralds a new chapter for the youth football program, infused with the expertise and experience of a seasoned player who once graced the international stage.

Laryea Kingston, a stalwart of Ghanaian football, boasts an illustrious playing career that saw him represent the nation with distinction in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2006 and 2008. Accumulating 42 caps for the country, Kingston’s journey from the playing field to the coach’s bench exemplifies a seamless transition driven by passion and commitment to the game.

Prior to his elevation to the role of head coach, Kingston had served as the assistant coach for the Black Starlets under the tutelage of Karim Zito.

Bringing Experience and Expertise

With over thirteen years of professional football experience garnered from stints in international leagues spanning Russia, Scotland, the Netherlands, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, Kingston brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to his new role.

His first-hand experience he gained in his playing days in elite football competitions equips him with a unique perspective that is poised to benefit the development of young talent within the Black Starlets setup.

Kingston’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Ghanaian football, signaling a concerted effort by the GFA to harness the expertise of former players in nurturing the next generation of footballing talents.

As the nation continues its quest to reclaim its status as a powerhouse in African football, the appointment of seasoned individuals like Kingston goes a long way to showcase the commitment of the GFA to fostering excellence at all levels of the game.

Who to Assist Kingston

Assisting Kingston will be former Hearts of Oak captain Jacob Nettey, known for leading Hearts of Oak to victory in the CAF Champions League in 2000. Nettey’s leadership qualities and extensive experience as a player for both club and country make him a valuable addition to the coaching staff.

Joining them is Nana Agyemang, a holder of CAF License A and UEFA Licence B, with previous coaching experience at various clubs and academies. Agyemang’s expertise in player development and tactical understanding will complement Kingston and Nettey’s coaching approach.

The newly appointed technical team has been entrusted with the task of building a strong squad for upcoming tournaments, including the West African Football Union (WAFU) B U-17 Cup of Nations in Accra 2024 and the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

As Kingston and his assistant assume their new roles at the helm of the Black Starlets, expectations are high for them to leverage their experience and expertise in steering the team towards success.

With a focus on player development, tactical acumen, and instilling a winning mentality, Kingston is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of Ghanaian football. Under his guidance, the Black Starlets aim to excel on the international stage, laying the groundwork for future generations to follow.
