Ministry of Tourism Hosts UNESCO Delegation to Strengthen Collaboration

Hon. Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer with UNESCO Delegations

In a bid to bolster cooperation and harness the transformative power of culture and heritage, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture welcomed a delegation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) earlier today.

UNESCO, renowned for its commitment to promoting peace, sustainable development, and intercultural dialogue worldwide, plays a pivotal role in Ghana through its Accra office.

Serving as an advisory body, UNESCO assists in shaping policies and programs that align with its core objectives while fostering cooperation among various stakeholders. Led by Mr. Edmond Moukala N’Gouemo, the UNESCO delegation engaged in discussions aimed at deepening collaborative efforts between the two entities.

“UNESCO is an important stakeholder in the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. It is important to deepen the collaborative spirit between the institutions. There is enormous potential that exists for the arts and culture sector to drive economic growth in Ghana, and I thank UNESCO for its support over the years particularly in successfully rolling out a series of capacity-building initiatives in Ghana.”

Hon. Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, Minister Designated for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the significance of culture in Ghana’s socio-economic and political landscape. Mr. N’Gouemo underscored UNESCO’s admiration for Ghana’s forthcoming Culture Policy, recognizing it as a strategic instrument capable of influencing politics, education, and overall development in the country. He reiterated UNESCO’s keen interest in facilitating the finalization and implementation of the policy document.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture’s welcome to a delegation from UNESCO reflects a broader international effort to enhance cooperation and leverage the power of culture and heritage for sustainable development.

This initiative aligns with UNESCO’s World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Programme, which was developed to create a framework for achieving shared and sustainable outcomes related to tourism at World Heritage properties. The programme was inspired by the decision of the World Heritage Committee at its 34th.

UNESCO’s approach to sustainable tourism development emphasizes the creation of thematic routes to promote heritage-based tourism. This strategy aims to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of destinations by developing their cultural assets. The goal is to create local distinctiveness in the face of globalization and to promote sustainable development based on heritage values.

This involves coordinating destination management and marketing associated with different heritage routes to promote and coordinate high-quality, unique experiences based on UNESCO-recognized heritage.

Moreover, Mr. N’Gouemo highlighted the potential of harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to preserve and promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. By integrating AI into heritage and creative arts initiatives, he noted, Ghana could effectively preserve its cultural legacy while making it accessible to a global audience.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to enhance collaboration between the Ministry and UNESCO, with a focus on harnessing culture and heritage as drivers of sustainable development and global understanding.

As Ghana continues to position itself as a cultural hub on the African continent, partnerships with global organizations like UNESCO are essential in realizing its cultural and economic aspirations. With a shared vision for leveraging culture for positive change, the collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and UNESCO promises to yield significant benefits for Ghana’s cultural landscape and its people.
