NPP Elder Bemoans Party’s Internal Rifts

Professor Chrsitopher Ameyaw-Akumfi

Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a member of the National Council of Elders of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed deep concerns regarding what he describes as the dangerous path of internal divisions within the party.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi reacting to a former member of the ruling party’s Kwabena Owusu Aduomi’s decision to contest as an independent candidate in the Ejisu by-election stressed the critical need for unity among members of the ruling party.

He expressed deep concerns over what he describes as the party’s inability to resolve some misunderstandings and concerns earlier raised by Mr Aduomi leading to his fallout with the party and subsequent decision to contest as an independent candidate in the Ejisu by-election.

The former Minister of Education under former President John Kufuor’s administration further underscored the imperative for the party leadership to take immediate and decisive action in resolving all internal conflicts ahead of the upcoming election.

Calls for Urgent Action

In a clarion call to action, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi challenged the leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party to embark on a concerted effort to address all internal rifts that threatens the unity of the party.

“I was touched by the statement from our national chairman about his resolve to reach out to Aduomi. I feel these reconciliation efforts could have been done long ago, especially during the aftermath of the presidential and parliamentary elections, but it is not too late. The writing is on the wall. NPP needs to unite or perish”

Central to his admonition is the need for the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party to undertake swift and urgent reconciliation processes to address the grievances of disgruntled members, to fortify the party’s cohesion and resilience.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi highlighted the profound impact of internal discord on the governing New Patriotic Party’s electoral prospects in the upcoming December general elections.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi underscored the indispensable role of internal party unity in securing electoral success, cautioning the ruling party to take swift action.

He emphasised that failure to address internal disputes promptly could prove detrimental to the party’s chances of emerging victorious in the December 7 polls.

In an earlier statement, the National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayensu Ntim expressed worry about Kwabena Owusu Aduomi’s decision to contest as an independent candidate in the recently held by-election in Ejisu Constituency.

Mr Ntim thus expressed his commitment to do all he could to reconcile the Independent Candidate for the Ejisu by-election, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi back to the ruling party.

The former three-time New Patriotic Party’s Member of Parliament for the Ejisu Constituency, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi chose to run as an Independent Candidate in the recent by-election in Ejisu Constituency following the death of the former Member of Parliament, Dr John Kumah Esq.

According to him, his decision was based on the New Patriotic Party’s failure to address critical concerns about the existing delegates’ list, which he believes compromises the integrity and fairness of the party.

Some members of the ruling party including President Akufo-Addo accused him of betrayal and alleged he had defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
