Ghanaians Demand Economic Accountability as Bawumia’s Campaign Faces Scrutiny

In the wake of mounting economic concerns, calls among Ghanaians have intensified for the New Patriotic Party flagbearer and the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to provide urgent solutions to the country’s dire financial situation ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Many Ghanaians have expressed disappointment over the perceived failure of the current government to translate it past promises into tangible improvements, fueling a growing scepticism among several citizens regarding the sustainability of the government’s economic plans.

While the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has thus far focused on promising more initiatives, many critics argue that without addressing the underlying structural issues, these pledges are likely to stumble.

For many, the high debt levels, coupled with volatile exchange rates, pose significant challenges to economic stability and investor confidence.

Franklin Cudjoe, the Founding President and Chief Executive Officer of IMANI Centre for Policy and Education in a call for action urged the Dr Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to provide concrete strategies for reversing what he describes as the “coldest economic data in a generation”.

Mr Cudjoe emphasized the need for practical measures to restore both wealth and dignity to citizens who have been adversely affected by economic downturns, stating that many are merely existing with diminishing hope.

“So far the campaign is doing well promising more, but the promises will falter and die with a wobbly economy not servicing debts with high exchange rates capable of chasing away some investors. Miracles Aboagye Dennis and the campaign team, l know you can do this. It is possible. May God guide you”.

Dr. Kwame Asiedu Sarpong, Democracy and Development Fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) echoed these sentiments, expressing deep concern over the alarming depreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi.

Dr Sarpong questioned the competence of those in charge, asserting that the current state of the currency indicates a loss of control over the country’s economic management.

He particularly singled out the Vice President, who is the Chairman of the Economic Management Team (EMT), urging him and his team to take decisive action to stabilize the Ghanaian economy.

The sentiments expressed by Mr Cudjoe and Dr Sarpong reflect a broader dissatisfaction among Ghanaians with the current economic trajectory.

Currently, the Ghanaian cedi is trading with the US dollar at GHS 14, and GHS 16 to the British Pound Sterling.

In addition, a World Bank recent report indicates that nearly I million Ghanaians have been pushed below the poverty line, signalling a precarious situation for the country.

As the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia seeks the mandate of the Ghanaian people, there is a pressing need for the current government, and particularly the Vice President, to take responsibility for addressing the country’s economic challenges.

Among many things, the Vice President must demonstrate his commitment to addressing the root causes of the economic crisis and implementing effective solutions that will restore stability and prosperity to the country.

There is no doubt that several Ghanaians among the political divide are demanding concrete action plans that would improve their standard of living and prioritize economic growth.

Failure to do so risks further erosion of public trust and confidence in the leadership’s ability to steer Ghana towards a brighter economic future.
