Celestine Donkor Apologises For ‘Joke’ About Ewe Surnames

Celestine Donkor

Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has issued an apology following a recent backlash sparked by comments she made during an interview.

In a video posted on her social media, Celestine Donkor apologized for her statements and emphasized her pride in her Ewe heritage, stating that the joke does not reflect her true sentiments.

She acknowledged that not all comments made in jest are received well by everyone and expressed regret for any hurt feelings.

“I granted an interview on Today’s Woman on TV3, and when I discovered the host, Cookie Tee, is an Ewe, I just got excited, and we started joking about the heaviness of our Ewe surnames. It was just a joke that came up in a conversation.

“To my surprise, from all the comments I’ve read so far, it turns out to be a bad joke, an expensive joke. And who am I? I’m just human. Most of the time, when we go on these interviews, as much as we have a pure heart and a clear mind, it’s not everything you say that will be pleasing to somebody, and so I’m sorry.”

The “Agbegbolo” hitmaker reassured her audience of her deep respect for the Ewe language, referring to it as a spiritual language spoken in heaven.

She encouraged her followers to view the incident as a learning experience and thanked them for their constructive feedback.

“And this will in no way tarnish my pride as an Ewe. I have proven over the years in my music journey that I am a very, very proud Ewe. And absolutely nothing is going to change that fact. Anyone who has truly followed me knows that I’m very proud of it.

“With love and respect to all of you. I take all the comments in good faith. I interpret them as an expression of your love. Those who love you are those who correct you when you’re wrong. So thank you so much, and I’ll keep doing my best.”

Cookie Tee on Thursday morning while hosting the New Day Show also rendered her apology and explained that the comment was just to excite the show and not to denigrate the Ewe tribe.

“It was supposed to be an ice breaker to a conversation, it wasn’t supposed to be the way it was taken at all. This morning, sincerely from my heart, I just want to apologise to all of you, it was a joke that went bad.

“I’m rendering my apology to the ewe community and Ghanaians. It was a joke and not meant to denigrate the ewe community.”

During the interview, she commented on her Ewe surname and mentioned that she had prayed for a husband with a ‘lighter’ surname to avoid the ‘heavy’ Ewe names common in her culture.

The host, Cookie Tee, whose real name is Shirelly Emma Tiblilla, agreed with Celestine’s sentiment, stating that she did not want to marry a man with a difficult-to-pronounce Ewe name.

However, their comments were not well-received by many on social media, who criticized them for making a mockery of the Ewe culture.

Celebrated gospel musician, Celestine Donkor shared the story of how she met her husband and the circumstances leading up to their marriage.

She disclosed that she met Kofi Donkor online, explaining that a friend living abroad introduced them.

He traveled to Ghana with the sole purpose of marrying her, driven by a strong belief in their destined union.

“We met through a friend who left Ghana for abroad. They spoke about me, and he took my number, so we were talking on the phone. At the time, it was Yahoo Messenger we were using. My husband then took my engagement list and everything, even before seeing me physically.”

According to the singer, her husband had received the spiritual message of her becoming his wife.

Upon receiving the spiritual clearance, she revealed he wasted no time in settling down with her and they have been together ever since.

“He came to Ghana purposely to marry me. He said he also prayed about me, and before he met me through my friend, there was a word he was looking forward to. There was just a word hanging on his life, and he was waiting for its manifestation.

“So when he met my friend and there was a discussion, he got to know that this is the person the man of God spoke about.”
