Mobilizing Clean Cooking Solutions Across Africa

Mobilizing Clean Cooking Solutions Across Africa

In a landmark initiative aimed at transforming the energy landscape of Africa, the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) and the Global LPG Partnership (GLPGP) have successfully raised $1 billion in financing dedicated to advancing clean cooking solutions through the widespread adoption of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

This significant investment underscores a commitment to addressing one of the most pressing challenges facing the continent: the lack of access to clean cooking fuels, which affects nearly half of Africa’s population. The fund is poised to facilitate the widespread development and deployment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) throughout the continent, addressing critical public health, environmental, and economic challenges.

“LPG not only offers a lifeline to millions but also paves the way for a greener, more sustainable future,” stated Kimball Chen, Executive Chairman of the GLPGP. He emphasized the urgency of the initiative, calling on global leaders, institutional donors, and private stakeholders to commit to decisive action. “We urge global leaders, institutional donors, and private stakeholders to seize this opportunity and commit to decisive action, safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the environment,” Chen added.

As Africa’s population is projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, the need for accessible and sustainable energy solutions becomes increasingly crucial. Currently, four in five Africans—roughly 1 billion people—lack access to clean cooking options.

ARDA Executive Secretary Anibor Kragha highlighted that this gap represents not only a significant barrier to achieving universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy but also poses immense health, economic, and environmental challenges.

The increased use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Africa is poised to significantly impact air quality and emissions positively, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional cooking fuels like biomass, coal, and charcoal.

The increased use of LPG in Africa is expected to lead to significant improvements in air quality and reductions in emissions, contributing to better health outcomes, environmental conservation, and socio-economic development. However, overcoming the infrastructural and affordability challenges is crucial to ensure that the benefits of LPG are widely shared across the continent.

Boosting Local Capacity and Reducing Imports

Clean Cooking

“While the rest of the world has seen huge advances in universal clean cooking access, today, four in five Africans – roughly 1 billion people – still lack access to clean cooking.”

“This remains not only one of the major barriers to achieving access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy on the continent but also one of the greatest health, economic, and environmental burdens.”

Anibor Kragha, Executive Secretary of ARDA.

The health implications are profound, as reliance on traditional cooking methods, such as wood, charcoal, and kerosene, contributes to severe respiratory issues and other health problems. The World Health Organization estimates that household air pollution from these methods causes over 500,000 premature deaths annually in Africa.

Moreover, the economic and environmental tolls are equally significant, with deforestation and time lost in fuel collection impeding economic progress.

Africa’s current gas refining capacity stands at approximately 75 million tons per year, spread across just 20 countries. This limited infrastructure has made the continent heavily reliant on imports to meet its LPG demand.

The newly mobilized fund aims to address this imbalance by enhancing local LPG production capabilities and expanding storage infrastructure. Presently, only six African nations have a combined storage capacity exceeding 50,000 tons.

The financial boost is expected to drive investments in expanding Africa’s LPG storage and refining capacities, reducing dependency on imports, and ensuring a more stable and secure supply of LPG. This development is critical for fostering economic resilience and environmental sustainability.

The $1 billion financing mobilized by ARDA and GLPGP marks a pivotal step towards transforming Africa’s energy landscape. By promoting the adoption of clean cooking solutions, this initiative will not only improve public health outcomes but also drive sustainable development and environmental conservation across the continent. The call to action now lies with global leaders and stakeholders to support and amplify these efforts, ensuring a healthier and more prosperous future for Africa.
