The latest revelations by Businessman and the third accused person, Richard Jakpa in the ongoing Ambulance trial in an affidavit submitted to the court have stirred significant concerns and public sentiment among many well-meaning Ghanaians.

In his statement, Mr Jakpa claimed that the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame had informed him that his inclusion in the prosecution was a strategic move to conceal the true motives behind the trial.

According to Mr Jakpa, the Attorney-General instituted the action under pressure from the President of the Republic and the then Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, to persecute the then-Ranking Member of the Finance Committee of Parliament and now Minority Leader, Honorable Dr Ato Forson.

These allegations have ignited significant public sentiment and concern among Ghanaians, including Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana.

The renowned political scientist, in commenting on the matter, highlighted the potential dangers the revelations pose to the country’s justice and legal system.

He argued that Mr Richard Jakpa’s affidavit suggests a disturbing level of political interference in the judicial process, adding that if his claims are substantiated, it implies that the highest offices in the land may be exerting undue influence over legal proceedings to achieve political ends.

This scenario, Professor Gyampo noted not only undermines public confidence in the country’s judicial system but also threatens the foundational principles of justice and fairness.

“Ideally, the NDC, given its revolutionary past, should have been more vicious, vindictive and ruthless in dealing with political opponents.

“We heard its former National Chairman, the late Dr Kwabena Adjei at least saying there are many ways to kill a cat when he was demanding certain drastic actions to be taken against some people who weren’t members of his party. But Prof Mills pulled the breaks”.

The NPP’s Alleged Vendetta

However, Professor Gyampo stated that the revelation by Mr Jakpa in the ongoing Ambulance trial under the New Patriotic Party administration appears more concerning.

He emphasized that the revelations indicate a calculated effort to ensure the imprisonment of the Minority Leader, and former Deputy Minister of Finance Dr Ato Forson for his perceived critical stance against the ruling government.

Professor Gyampo thus expressed disappointment that such actions are occurring under a regime that was expected to uphold higher standards of governance.

He asserted that if Mr Jakpa could provide evidence to support his allegations, it would not only implicate high-ranking officials but also severely damage public confidence in the judiciary.

“I wouldn’t advise the NDC to pay them back tomorrow but the NPP must know that, the revolutionary fervour of the NDC was only suspended during the reign of Prof Mills, just for the purposes of safeguarding our peace as a nation”.

Professor Gyampo also stated that the perception that the judicial process can be manipulated for political gain threatens the foundational principles of justice and fairness that are supposed to underpin the legal system.

As posited by Professor Gyampo, the potential ramifications of the revelations made by the Businessman and the third accused person in the ongoing Ambulance trial, Richard Jakpa are very profound.

Public confidence in the judiciary, which is a cornerstone of democratic governance, which ensures that all citizens believe in the fairness and impartiality of legal proceedings is likely to be derailed if the revelation is proven substantial.

Again, such actions could set a dangerous precedence where political power is used to settle scores, rather than upholding the law, undermining the separation of powers, a fundamental aspect of democratic governance, where the judiciary must remain independent and free from political influence.

Given the nature of the latest revelations, it is, therefore imperative for the court to thoroughly investigate the claims made by Richard Jakpa to ascertain the truth.

The implications of these allegations are too significant to be ignored. If proven true, they would necessitate a serious reevaluation of the practices within the Attorney-General’s office and the broader judicial system to restore public trust and ensure that justice is delivered free from political interference.
