Leading CSOs Seek Solutions to Ghana’s Power Sector Challenges

In a concerted effort to address the enduring challenges plaguing Ghana’s power sector, leading Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) such as IMANI Africa and the Africa Centre for Energy Policy are spearheading a pivotal engagement aimed at unravelling the complexities and forging a path towards sustainable solutions.

Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President & CEO of IMANI Africa emphasized that Ghana’s power sector remains a critical pillar for the nation’s economic growth and development. Despite substantial investments by successive governments over the past decade, the sector continues to grapple with periodic instabilities and long-term unreliability. These challenges have manifested in recurrent power outages, which not only disrupt daily life but also hinder economic activities and growth.

“The recent power outages have sparked serious concerns about the institutional coordination between the power sector utility companies and the leadership needed to ensure coherence of action to restore stability in the power supply.”

CSOs like IMANI Africa and the Africa Centre for Energy Policy have been at the forefront of monitoring the debates and disputes surrounding efforts to restore stability to Ghana’s power supply. Their involvement ensures that discussions are grounded in evidence and focused on the critical issues affecting the sector, free from unfounded accusations and political distractions.

To address these concerns and foster a better understanding of the recent power sector challenges, CSOs in the energy sector, led by IMANI Africa and the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), in collaboration with COSECA, NRGI, and IES, have organized an engagement session.

The aim of this session is to work with the management teams of key power sector entities, namely the Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and Energy Commission.

“The engagement session will take place at the Alisa North Ridge Hotel in Accra on Friday, June 14th, 2024, commencing at 10:00 am,” Mr Cudjoe stated. Representatives from the CSOs and the invited power sector entities are expected to attend to exchange ideas, share perspectives, and collectively seek solutions to the pressing issues affecting Ghana’s power sector.

Franklin Cudjoe, Founding President & CEO of IMANI Africa, expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of this engagement. He emphasised the importance of addressing the underlying issues in the power sector to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply for all Ghanaians.

“This event is a critical step towards fostering better understanding and cooperation among stakeholders in the power sector. By engaging with the management teams of our key utilities, we hope to identify actionable strategies that will lead to tangible improvements in the sector.”

The implications of these challenges and the subsequent engagement are far-reaching. A stable and reliable power supply is essential for Ghana’s economic growth and development. By addressing the current issues, the country stands to benefit from improved industrial productivity, enhanced living standards, and increased foreign direct investment. The event represents a significant opportunity for stakeholders to come together, share insights, and work collaboratively towards a brighter future for Ghana’s power sector.

The invitation to this event underscores the critical need for collective action and dialogue in addressing the challenges facing Ghana’s power sector. By bringing together key stakeholders, CSOs like IMANI Africa and the Africa Centre for Energy Policy are taking a proactive step towards ensuring that the sector’s challenges are met with informed and effective solutions.

As the date approaches, there is a palpable sense of anticipation and hope that this engagement will mark a turning point for Ghana’s power sector, leading to lasting improvements and stability. The event promises to be a landmark moment in the ongoing efforts to secure a reliable power supply for the nation’s future.
