In a significant move towards strengthening international partnerships, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has called for enhanced collaboration and mutual growth between African countries and South Korea. Speaking at the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, alongside South Korea’s President, Yoon Suk-Yeol, President Akufo-Addo laid out a comprehensive vision centered around shared growth, sustainability, and solidarity.

Highlighting the historical ties between Ghana and Korea, established almost half a century ago in 1977, President Akufo-Addo praised Korea as a steadfast ally and trusted friend. He emphasized the multifaceted benefits derived from their economic, cultural, and political interactions over the years. The President expressed optimism about the enduring strength of this partnership, underscoring the collaborative ethos that has defined their relationship.

At the heart of his address, President Akufo-Addo identified three pivotal areas for the advancement of Africa-Korea relations: shared growth, sustainability, and solidarity. He stressed the necessity of economic collaboration, leveraging Africa’s vast natural resources and young demographic as strategic advantages. By encouraging trade, investment, and innovation, he envisioned a synergistic relationship that could benefit both continents.

Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, President Akufo-Addo advocated for sustainable practices to safeguard the environment and foster renewable energy adoption. He lauded Korea’s pioneering role in green technology and sustainable development, urging African nations to tap into these advancements. This approach was framed not just as an ecological responsibility but also as an economic avenue for sustained growth and stability.

The President also underscored the importance of global solidarity, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and other worldwide challenges. He highlighted the value of mutual support in building collective resilience. Referencing Korea’s recent trilateral engagement with Japan and China, President Akufo-Addo noted the potential of such alliances among economic giants for Africa, leading to greater investments, access to new markets, and technological transfers.

Emphasizing the transformative power of innovation and technology in driving sustainable development, President Akufo-Addo called for concerted efforts in research and development, enhancing digital literacy, and nurturing entrepreneurship. This strategy aims to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the fourth industrial revolution.

Expressing optimism about the future trajectory of Africa-Korea relations, President Akufo-Addo concluded by urging both parties to capitalize on the current momentum. He envisioned a future marked by shared growth, sustainability, and solidarity, calling upon all stakeholders to deepen their collaboration and construct a brighter, more prosperous future together.

The summit provided an opportunity for leaders from Africa and Korea to deepen their collaboration and strengthen bonds. President Akufo-Addo urged both regions to, “seize this moment and work together towards a brighter and more prosperous future for all. By creating a legacy of progress and prosperity, the partnership between Africa and Korea can benefit generations to come.”

The 2024 Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul showcased the commitment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other leaders to forge stronger international partnerships. The theme of “The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity” served as a powerful call to action, highlighting the potential for economic collaboration, sustainable development, and mutual support. By working together, Africa and Korea can create a legacy that will positively impact their nations and the global community.
