Lil Win Risks Imprisonment Or A Fine

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has provided a detailed analysis of the charges brought against actor Lil Win by the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The police have accused the Kumawood actor of dangerous driving and negligently causing harm in an accident that resulted in the tragic death of three-year-old Tawiah Ampomah.

Kpebu clarified that if found guilty, Lil Win could face imprisonment or a fine as a penalty for the charges.

He noted that, based on how previous accident cases were handled, it is more common for offenders to receive fines rather than prison sentences.

“In terms of penalties, imprisonment is possible, but fines are typically imposed. However, in particularly severe cases, imprisonment can occur, and it can be up to five years.”

The lawyer suggested that considering the loss of life, jail terms should be seriously considered as a punishment for road accidents.

“We don’t often charge them with manslaughter. So, is it reckless, dangerous driving, etc.? Yes. Over the past decade, more than 2000 people have died annually in road accidents. Yet, we don’t see drivers being imprisoned for years.”

Meanwhile, Lil Win was taken into police custody on Monday, June 3, 2024, following his discharge from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

He has subsequently been granted bail worth GH¢50,000 with the case adjourned to June 27, 2024.

Despite the delay attributed to Lil Win’s health, his lawyer, Margaret Adjei-Twum, argued for his bail, citing his injuries, which included internal bleeding, and stated that the bail was necessary for him to continue his medical treatment.

Adjei-Twum assured the court that her client’s prominence in Ghana and his commitment to facing legal proceedings eliminated any risk of him fleeing.

The defense also expressed concerns about being rushed to court by the police before Lil Win had fully recovered.

Bereaved Family Won’t Be Cajoled In Pursuit Of Justice

An alleged family member of the three-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a road accident involving the popular actor, Lil Win, warned that they will not be intimidated in their pursuit of justice.

He cautioned that they should not be underestimated, as the victim came from a family of means.

“He believes he is dealing with a family of modest means. We are taking this matter extremely seriously. The utterances of his PRO led a presenter to caution me against being bought off, and I informed him that everyone familiar with our family in Kumasi knows we are not impoverished.

“If you consider the Nyarko Towers, where we reside, that is merely a modest property we have rented in town; we return home on weekends. So, if they think they are dealing with vulnerable individuals they can bully, they should exercise caution.”

According to him, they have evidence that the comic actor was drunk when he rammed into the boy’s father’s car.

He further claimed that bottles of alcoholic drinks were found inside his car’s boot following the accident.

The man alleged that Lil Win was discharged from the hospital last week Wednesday, but refused to go home just to dodge his arrest.

The angry man stated that Lil Win was faking injury when he appeared in court Monday as he had been completely fine in the days following the accident, having attended his movie premiere and then a church service.

He also clarified that the late Nana Yaw was seated at the back and not the front of his father’s car when the accident happened.
