NUGS Condemns Attack On Student, Demands Justice

Nana Boakye, Attack Victim

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has denounced the violent attack on a student at Christian Service University College, which occurred on June 19, 2024, during an event featuring former President John Dramani Mahama, and has called for swift action to address the incident.

The Union has taken note of and expressed concern over the regrettable incident that marred the 50th Anniversary Public Lecture at Christian Service University College and is deeply troubled by the unfortunate events that transpired.

“During this event, a second-year student was allegedly subjected to physical assault by some unknown assailants, resulting in serious injuries. This incident arose because the student expressed disagreement with discussions in one of the sessions”.

Moreover, NUGS reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of decorum, civility, and respectful dialogue in all academic and social settings, and condemned any behavior that undermines these fundamental principles.

The Union also emphasized its strong encouragement to all its members and constituents to actively engage in peaceful, respectful, and constructive dialogue, fostering a culture of thoughtful discourse and open exchange of ideas.

Accordingly, NUGS vehemently denounced the heinous act of violence perpetrated against the student for simply expressing his opinion, emphasizing that such egregious suppression of free speech and brutal intimidation of a student exercising their right to expression is utterly unacceptable and reprehensible.

The Union demanded a prompt and thorough investigation into this incident by Christian Service University College’s management and the Ghana Police Service, to identify and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous act.

NUGS also urged all students to exercise their right to free speech in a respectful and civil manner, promoting peaceful dialogue and harmony, particularly in this sensitive election year, and emphasizing the importance of constructive engagement and thoughtful discourse in shaping a brighter future for all.

Peace And Tolerance Urged In Ghana’s Political Climate

Furthermore, NUGS appealed to the general public to embrace a culture of tolerance, understanding, and peaceful coexistence, upholding the fundamental principles of democracy and the multiparty system.

The Union also urged the public to promote a spirit of inclusivity, respect, and civic responsibility, as they navigate the complexities of Ghana’s political landscape.

“NUGS remains committed to fostering an environment where every student feels safe and respected. We assure all students that we will continue to advocate for their rights and well-being”.

The Union further emphasized the crucial role of tolerance in fostering peace and stability, highlighting the need to embrace diverse perspectives and engage in constructive dialogue, even in the face of conflicting views.

This, according to the National Union of Ghana Students, is to build a harmonious and inclusive society where diverse voices are valued and respected.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also called on former President John Dramani Mahama to render an unconditional and unreserved apology for the alleged involvement of his bodyguards in the incident.

The Youth Wing emphatically declared that nothing less than a full and unambiguous apology from former President John Dramani Mahama would be deemed acceptable and that any attempt to justify or downplay the incident would be met with strong condemnation and outrage.

The NPP Youth Wing expressed utter dismay and shock upon learning about the physical assault of a student at Christian Service University College, simply for expressing their opinion that “Mahama will lose in 2024”.

“This harmless statement caused the bodyguards to rush to the students in rambo-style and beat them in the presence of John Mahama and members of convocation without any reprimand”.

NPP Youth Wing

The NPP Youth Wing demands that the individuals allegedly responsible for the assault be immediately handed over to the police for a thorough investigation and potential criminal charges, ensuring that justice is served and the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
