Former President John Dramani Mahama and Ambassador Park Kyongsig of South Korea

In a significant diplomatic engagement, former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2024 general elections, met Ambassador Park Kyongsig of South Korea.

The meeting focused on enhancing the longstanding relationship between Ghana and South Korea through increased support and investment, particularly in light of Ghana’s current economic challenges.

Former President Jon Dramani Mahama, in his remarks, expressed his profound gratitude to Ambassador Park for South Korea’s decision to forgive Ghana’s debt.

This gesture, the former President noted, will play a crucial role in bolstering Ghana’s ongoing debt restructuring efforts.

“The debt forgiveness from South Korea is a significant relief and a testament to the strong bilateral ties between our nations. It will greatly aid our efforts to stabilize the economy during these challenging times”.

A key highlight of the discussions was the $2 billion framework arrangement agreed upon by former President John Dramani Mahama and Ambassador Park Kyongsig of South Korea.

The National Democratic Congress flagbearer in exciting remarks noted that the substantial investment is poised to impact crucial sectors such as healthcare, education, environment, and agriculture.

He emphasized the transformative potential of this arrangement, particularly in enhancing food sufficiency through the introduction of new rice varieties.

Furthermore, the opposition National Democratic Congress leader underscored South Korea’s commitment to Ghana’s agricultural sector, commending the introduction of new rice varieties.

He emphasized that the move holds immense potential for Ghana to achieve food sufficiency and boost the country’s agricultural productivity.

In addition to expressing gratitude for South Korea’s past and ongoing support, former President John Dramani Mahama outlined the National Democratic Congres’s plans to further advance Ghana’s agricultural sector.

He shared his vision of establishing rice mills and Farmer Service Centres across the country, initiatives aimed at empowering local farmers and enhancing the agricultural value chain.

“Our plan to set up rice mills and Farmer Service Centres is part of our broader strategy to support farmers, increase productivity, and ensure food security”.

Independence of Ghana’s Electoral Commission

Moreover, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 general elections spoke on critical issues on the upcoming 2024 general elections in Ghana.

Mr Mahama voiced concerns about the independence of the Electoral Commission and called on South Korea and the international community to advocate for free and fair elections.

“The integrity of our electoral process is paramount. I urge South Korea and the international community to support our call for an independent Electoral Commission and to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted fairly”.

Expressing optimism about the future, former President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the partnership between Ghana and South Korea, when elected as President in the upcoming general elections.

He expressed profound appreciation to the government and the people of South Korea for its unwavering support to Ghana, underscoring his commitment to continue collaboration with the country when elected into power.

Mr Mahama, thus emphasized that with effective collaboration, the two countries can overcome the challenges and achieve sustainable development for their people.

Former President John Dramani Mahama concluded his remarks by underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing economic challenges and fostering sustainable development.

Ghana and South Korea have maintained strong diplomatic relations since the establishment of formal ties in 1977.

The relationship is marked by cooperation in various sectors, including trade, education, technology, and development.

South Korea has been a key partner in Ghana’s development efforts, providing aid and technical assistance in areas like agriculture, infrastructure, and education.

Trade between the two countries has grown, with South Korean companies investing in Ghana’s energy and manufacturing sectors.

Regular high-level visits and cultural exchanges further strengthen the bilateral ties, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration.
