Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, has appealed to the Electoral Commission to guarantee the integrity of the upcoming election, ensuring a process that is free from manipulation, fair to all parties involved, and transparent in its conduct, according to her spokesperson, James Agyenim-Boateng.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, via her spokesperson, expressed concern over the sporadic violence that marred the recent limited registration and voter transfer exercises, emphasizing the need for the Electoral Commission to implement robust measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents in the forthcoming general elections.

James Agyenim-Boateng noted that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pointed out that by implementing robust measures, the Commission can ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.

“‘Ghana’s democracy has over the years been the envy of many countries due to its nature of organizing free and fair elections but the violence that is characterizing our elections of late is very worrying’. The NDC Running Mate said this when she paid a courtesy call to the Chief of Akyem Tafo, Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, as part of her one-day tour of the Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern Region”.

James Agyenim-Boateng

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, as stated by her spokesperson James Agyenim-Boateng, called on traditional leaders to actively engage with and scrutinize the management of Ghana’s electoral system, using their influence to advocate for improvements and changes that promote peaceful and violence-free elections.

He noted that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also implored the Electoral Commission (EC) to assume the role of an impartial arbiter, ensuring the establishment of a transparent and equitable electoral process, devoid of bias or favoritism towards any political parties, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all contenders.

He further noted that the NDC running mate, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, also appealed to all stakeholders and citizens to play their roles in ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process on December 7th, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in upholding the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.

The Chief of Akyem Tafo, Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, emphasized that appointing a woman as Vice President would be a groundbreaking achievement for Ghana, and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s distinguished academic background and experience make her exceptionally qualified to excel in the role, as noted by James Agyenim-Boateng.

Agyenim-Boateng reported that Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV also admonished the Electoral Commission (EC) to maintain impartiality and neutrality in its interactions with all political parties, ensuring a level playing field and thereby guaranteeing the integrity of the electoral process, free from bias and manipulation.

“Osabarima Adusei Peasah also bemoaned the collapse of the agricultural business in the area, especially the work of the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), and urged the next NDC administration to bring it back to life when the party wins the December 7 general elections”.

James Agyenim-Boateng

As Ghana prepares to head to the polls on December 7th, the election must be conducted in a peaceful and tranquil manner as the nation’s democracy and stability depend on it.

Many stakeholders including CSOs indicated that a peaceful election will not only ensure the safety of citizens but also foster a sense of trust and confidence in the electoral process.

Furthermore, the National Peace Council (NPC) pointed out that a peaceful election will also allow for a smooth transition of power, thereby maintaining the country’s stability and development.

Likewise, a peaceful election will showcase Ghana’s maturity and commitment to democratic values, enhancing its reputation on the international stage.

All stakeholders must therefore, work together to ensure that the election is free from violence, intimidation, and fraud and that the will of the people is reflected in the outcome as a peaceful election is a collective responsibility, and together, we can make it a reality.
