Accra Mayor Urges Youth Participation in Accra City Cleanliness

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, has issued a passionate call to the youth of the city to engage actively in volunteer efforts aimed at maintaining cleanliness.

This appeal was made during her interaction with the ‘Buzstopboys’ on the inaugural day of the Homowo Clean-up Campaign, an initiative designed to enhance the city’s sanitation ahead of the annual Homowo festival.

“The participation of our youth is essential in our efforts to keep Accra clean. Their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment can make a significant difference.”

The Homowo Clean-up Campaign was organized by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, the Ministry of Interior, Local Government Authorities, and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, under the auspices of the Ga Traditional Council (GTC).

The campaign aims to improve the city’s sanitation, particularly in preparation for the Homowo festival, a significant cultural event for the Ga people.

The first day of the campaign saw a concerted effort in the Mlitsagonno, Kinka, and Korle Woko electoral areas. Various stakeholders, including security services, traditional leaders, community leaders, sanitation workers, staff of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and volunteers, participated in the clean-up exercise. Their collective efforts were aimed at significantly improving the cleanliness of these areas.

The clean-up activities will continue, with the focus shifting to the Ngleshie and Mudor Electoral Areas. Specific locations targeted for the clean-up include Mantse Agbonaa, Light House, Old Slaughter House, Jamestown Police Station, Osofo Owuo, London Market, Palladium, St Mary’s (right side), Agbado, Mudor, and Nana Apaa.

The Homowo Clean-up Campaign exemplifies a unified effort from various segments of the community. The involvement of traditional leaders, government ministries, local authorities, and dedicated groups like the ‘Buzstopboys’ highlights the collective commitment to enhancing Accra’s environmental health.

Mayor Sackey’s call to the youth is a significant step towards fostering a culture of volunteerism and community involvement. By engaging in these clean-up efforts, the youth of Accra have the opportunity to contribute actively to the sustainability of their environment.

The Homowo Clean-up Campaign is more than just a prelude to a festival; it is a critical initiative aimed at ensuring the sustainability of Accra’s environment.

Mayor Elizabeth Sackey’s appeal to the youth underscores the vital role they play in this endeavor. With their active participation, the dream of a cleaner, healthier Accra is within reach.

The commendable efforts of groups like the ‘Buzstopboys’ set a high standard for community involvement, demonstrating that collective action can lead to significant improvements in the city’s sanitation.
