The Founder and President of the Law and Society Network, Maverick Kwame Addi Addison has strongly criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging him to shift from making empty promises to providing concrete evidence of his contributions to Ghana’s economic development.

In an open letter addressed to the Vice President, Mr Addison highlighted the Vice President’s tendency to claim credit for initiatives that were already in progress before his tenure and called for detailed explanations on several critical economic issues.

The seasoned writer and activist, began his critique, by urging the New Patriotic Party Presidential Candidate to elucidate his specific contributions to the country’s economic development across various sectors as Vice President and the head of the Economic Management Team.

“Before making new commitments, demonstrate which of the previous promises you have fulfilled. Please refrain from citing the introduction of the Ghana Card or the paperless system at the ports as your achievements, since these initiatives were already in progress before you assumed office”.

Furthermore, the Founder and President of the Law Society denounced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s claim to the Mobile Money Interoperability project, emphasizing that records show the project was initiated during former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

He contended that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s involvement in realizing the Mobile Money Interoperability project was only limited to renegotiating the project’s cost.

Key Economic Issues: Exchange Rates, Debt, and Infrastructure

Mr Addison also raised several pressing economic questions that he believes require Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s immediate attention and clarification.

Among several of them, he demanded the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to disclose the improvements in the exchange rate since his assumption to office as the Vice President and head of the current government’s Economic Management Team.

On taxation vs. Production, Mr Addison queried the transition from a focus on taxation to one on production, a shift that, he argued Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has repeatedly promised but has yet to materialize.

Additionally, the Founder and President of the Law and Society Network sought updates on the progress in the Vice President’s proposal to build roads without borrowing, specifically mentioning the promise of concrete roads.

“oh please don’t forget to tell us about the concrete roads, the current Debt-to-GDP ratio, Tax-to-GDP ratio, developments in fuel prices, and utility tariffs”, Mr. Addison stated, highlighting the rising cost of living and the national debt as a significant concern.

The State of the Bank of Ghana

Moreover, Maverick Kwame Addi Addison expressed particular interest in the state of the Bank of Ghana, recalling Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s past assertions about its reserves during his tenure as Deputy Governor.

With Dr Bawumia’s self-professed expertise in economics, Mr Addison finds it ironic that Ghana is now seeking support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Given your self-professed expertise that earned you the moniker ‘economic wizkid’ and how with such we are seeking support from the IMF, we eagerly anticipate your detailed insights on these matters.

“We genuinely seek clarity on these topics, and another public lecture at Central University won’t be that bad. We shall delve into the economic downturn of Zimbabwe during your tenure as the economic and financial advisor to the Zimbabwean government at a later time”.

Maverick Kwame Addi Addison, the Founder and President of the Law and Society Network,

The Founder and President of the Law and Network Society, in concluding his statement, urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to provide transparent and detailed explanations regarding his contributions to the current state of Ghana’s economy.
