NPP at 32: Boakye Agyarko Calls for Renewal and Vigilance

NPP Flag

In a touching message marking the 32nd anniversary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a leading member and former presidential aspirant of the ruling party has saluted the party’s relentless journey while urging its members to scrutinize the current challenges that threaten its cohesion and future success.

The former Energy Minister under the first term of President Akufo-Addo’s administration began his message by paying tribute to the “gallant women and men” whose determination has been instrumental in the party’s progress.

He acknowledged the numerous achievements of the NPP over the past three decades but emphasized the need for introspection in light of the “difficulties and dangers” that the party now faces.

“32 years of struggle has brought us to an unprecedented political crossroads and we can hear the sputtering of the NPP engine. It is calling for our attention and we must heed the call”.

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, Former NPP Presidential Aspirant

Mr Agyarko painted a vivid picture of the NPP at a crucial juncture, underscoring the critical need for the party and its leadership to take positive action.

He invoked the wisdom of John Gardener, stressing that any organization, whether in the church, business, or government, must periodically reexamine its purpose to avoid getting sidetracked by peripheral issues.

“John Gardener teaches us that, “no organization in the church, business or government can survive unless from time to time it reexamines its purpose for being and returns to that original agenda; otherwise, it gets deflected into all sort of side issues”

This year’s critical election, according to Mr Agyarko, places the party in a “period of consequences and the urgency of immediate and positive action.

He highlighted the necessity to “arouse the flagging spirit” of the NPP and prepare it for the upcoming electoral battle.

The Fragility and Strength of the NPP

Furthermore, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko underscored the inherent fragility and strength of the ruling New Patriotic Party, likening it to a sociopolitical organization that is “fragile in our strength and delicate in our toughness”.

He explained that while the loyalty within the party contributes to its effective functioning, it also makes it susceptible to disruption.

The trust and covenant that bind the party together, he warned, are delicate and can snap if “attacked, tampered with, and stretched beyond our bearing.”

He called on the entire membership of the party to exercise caution and vigilance, recognizing the precarious balance on which the party currently stands.

Addressing the leadership, Mr Boakye borrowed lines from W.B. Yeats’ poem, urging them to act with caution and with restraint.

“To the leadership under whose watch the party is balanced on a knife edge, let me take a few modified lines from W.B Yeats’ poem- (he wishes for the clothes of heaven) as the plea from the party’s rank and file to you- we would spread our cloths under your feet; But being poor, have only our dreams; we have spread our dreams under your feet; tread softly because you tread on our dreams”.

Mr Agyarko’s message was a clarion call to the New Patriotic Party leadership to be mindful of the dreams and aspirations of the party’s rank and file.

He implored the leadership to recognize the gravity of their actions and decisions during this critical period, emphasizing that the loyalty and trust of the members are what sustain the party.

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a leading member of the ruling party concluded his message with congratulations to the NPP on its 32-year journey.

He underscored the party’s achievements and the importance of unity and renewal in the face of current challenges.
