Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Papa Owusu Ankomah, has reassured the Ghanaian community in the UK of their safety amidst the recent violent far-right protests.

The unrest erupted following misinformation attributing the stabbing of three children at a dance class to a Muslim immigrant, quickly escalating into violent attacks on foreigners.

Speaking on the matter, High Commissioner Papa Owusu Ankomah confirmed that no Ghanaian nationals have been harmed in the violence. He emphasized the proactive measures being taken to ensure the safety of Ghanaians residing in the UK.

“Except for one incident where a Ghanaian reported being threatened while taking a bus, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents affecting Ghanaians in the UK.”

The High Commissioner highlighted the continuous efforts of the Ghanaian diplomatic mission to safeguard the community.

“Even as of this morning, our officers are calling around the country, speaking with the leadership of the Ghanaian communities, asking for updates and urging them to encourage Ghanaians in the UK to try and be indoors by 7 pm.”

These measures are part of a broader strategy to keep the Ghanaian community informed and secure during this period of heightened tension.

Community Response and Concerns

Despite these assurances, some members of the Ghanaian community in the UK have expressed fear and uncertainty about their safety. The prospect of further protests, particularly in London, has left many feeling vulnerable and stranded in their homes.

“We are scared because of the current protests happening here in the UK. We have warned our kids not to go out because we have been told the protesters are heading to South-west London where we stay.”

A student voiced similar fears, stating, “I cannot go out because I don’t know what will happen on my way back or on my way to school because I may be alone.”

In response to these concerns, the Ghanaian High Commission has intensified its outreach efforts, ensuring continuous communication with community leaders and members. The High Commission is also collaborating with UK authorities to monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates to Ghanaians.

The diplomatic mission has advised Ghanaians to exercise caution, avoid large gatherings, and stay updated through official communication channels. Regular updates and safety advisories are being disseminated to keep the community well-informed and prepared for any developments.

In recent days, several cities across the UK have witnessed far-right protests. The initial spark was online misinformation blaming a Muslim immigrant for the stabbing of three children. This misinformation inflamed anti-immigrant sentiments, leading to widespread protests. Initially peaceful, these marches soon turned violent, with foreigners being targeted in the ensuing chaos.
