Security Analyst Dr. Victor Doke has expressed his insights on Ghana’s security relationship with foreign partners, particularly in the context of the Accra Initiative following the remarkable statement from the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

Moreover, he highlighted that the Accra initiative brings together seven countries to collaborate on counter-terrorism efforts, sharing intelligence and best practices in policing, military, and intelligence spheres.

Dr.  Doke emphasized that the presence of foreign security personnel in Ghana should not be viewed as a problem. Instead, he sees it as a positive development, as it allows Ghanaian security forces to gain knowledge and build capacity. He further emphasized on the need for us to know the common enemy we are fighting, this he asserted, reveals the “dynamics of who we are fighting against” and to enforce certain measure at appropriate locations which need to be carefully considered.

This collaboration, Dr.  Doke argued he believes, strengthens the Accra Initiative and enhances Ghana’s security apparatus, particularly in border security.

Meanwhile the influx of refugees, asylum seekers, and illegal immigrants pose a significant challenge. Dr.  Doke further advocates for a proactive approach to enforcing border security, not only in the Policing aspect but also the military aspect, and intelligence sphere all being part of the collaborative efforts in the Accra initiative. Dr. Doke argued that one cannot say because the foreign Forces are in Ghana, there’s some sort of, problem with them.

“I think for the fact that we know they are here, gaining knowledge, building their capacity with our security forces, it’s a good direction, and it helps the Accra initiative by and large, and also to enforce or to strengthen our security apparatus, with regards to the border security when it comes to the inflow of refugee’s asylum seekers, we are having immigrants that are coming in through illegal routes.”

Dr.  Doke, suggested that understanding the dynamics of the enemy is crucial in this fight and that Ghana’s partners can provide valuable expertise.

Dr.  Doke, disagreed with the notion that Ghana’s security is on a rocky ground due to foreign presence. Dr.  Doke, pointed out the presence of a new ambassador in Accra and the collaboration on security funds is an evidence of a healthy relationship to Ghana.

However, to safeguard this relationship, Dr.  Doke stressed the importance of careful management of public statements by political figures and heads.

“In my analysis… I think the [ security ] relationship [ Ghana has with foreign forces ] is okay. So, then what must be done to ensure or safeguard our relationship. We have to just ensure that certain comments do not come out from our political figures or heads that would mar that relationship [ which ] has been restored.

Dr.  Doke, warned that thoughtless comments could jeopardize the partnership and undermine the progress made. Meanwhile, Dr.  Doke with a nod to the complexity of the issue, urged the need for continued collaboration. His analysis offered a nuanced perspective on the benefits and challenges of Ghana’s security relationship with foreign partners.

It only remains imperative that the topic of Ghana’s relationship with its neighbor, the Burkina Faso, would continue to be a subject of debate. This highlighted the intricacies of international partnerships and national security demand with careful consideration.
