NDC Requests Emergency Meeting with EC over Discrepancies in Voter Exhibition Exercise

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially requested an emergency meeting with the Electoral Commission of Ghana following what it describes as the discovery of significant discrepancies in the ongoing 2024 voter exhibition exercise.

In a letter addressed to the Electoral Commission, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey highlighted concerns regarding inconsistencies between the Provisional Voter Register (PVR) provided to the party and the registers currently being exhibited at various centres across the country.

” We bring you greetings from the NDC Party Headquarters, Accra and trust that this letter finds you well. We write to request an important emergency meeting with you and your team to discuss very serious discrepancies discovered during the ongoing 2024 voter exhibition exercise”.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC General Secretary

The letter, sent from the NDC Party Headquarters in Accra, underscores the party’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.

According to the NDC, their analysis of the PVR, which was provided by the Electoral Commission, reveals several anomalies when compared to the physical registers on display at voter exhibition centres.

These discrepancies, the statement read have raised concerns among party officials and members who are advocating for immediate rectification to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

Key Concerns Raised by the NDC

The NDC’s call for an urgent meeting is rooted in their desire to address these irregularities swiftly. Although the letter did not specify the nature or extent of the discrepancies found, it hinted at potentially serious errors that could affect the accuracy and credibility of the voter rolls.

The discrepancies noted by the NDC could range from missing names to incorrect details, and even potential mismatches between voter identities and their assigned polling stations.

Such issues, if not resolved promptly, could disenfranchise voters and undermine public confidence in the electoral system.

This development comes at a critical time as Ghana prepares for its general elections in December 2024.

The voter exhibition exercise, which involves displaying the provisional voter register for public scrutiny, is a crucial step in ensuring that the final voter list is accurate and comprehensive.

It allows citizens to verify their registration details, request corrections, and report any anomalies before the final register is compiled.

The NDC’s demand for a meeting signals the party’s vigilance in safeguarding electoral transparency and fairness.

It also puts pressure on the Electoral Commission to address these concerns promptly and effectively.

Any delay or inaction could escalate tensions and lead to broader political and social ramifications.

The call for an emergency meeting is a reminder of the stakes involved in the electoral process and the need for all stakeholders to collaborate in upholding democratic principles.

The NDC’s concerns underscore the vital role that vigilance and accountability play in maintaining public confidence in elections, a cornerstone of any democratic society.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, on behalf of the NDC, expressed hope for a swift and positive response from the Electoral Commission.

He reiterated the opposition party’s commitment to working with the Commission to resolve these issues and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and transparent.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT of the NDC, in an earlier remark, praised the keen vigilance of NDC executives, members, and the party’s innovative EagleEyes initiative, which have collectively played a crucial role in uncovering and exposing electoral fraud.

According to Dr. Omane Boamah, the swift actions of the NDC’s EagleEyes initiative led to the arrest of two individuals implicated in electoral fraud, a testament to the party’s commitment to electoral integrity and accountability.

He launched a scathing attack on the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing it of catastrophic failure in safeguarding sensitive equipment, as evidenced by the audacious theft of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) laptops from its own high-security premises.
