In a crucial address to the youth, women, and delegates of the Walewale community in the Upper East Region, Dr. Mahama Kabiru has announced his decision to Participate in the Upcoming Walewale Rerun.

Dr. Kabiru emphasized the importance of having effective representation in the constituency. Dr. Kabiru spoke to a group of concerned constituents regarding recent developments in his candidacy and the next steps following a judicial decision that nullified his initial election as the NPP parliamentary candidate. Dr. Kabiru began by stressing that, the need for strong representation in the Walewale constituency drove the motivation for his candidacy in the first place.

Dr. Kabiru noted that his participation in the political contest was not merely for personal ambition but for the collective good of the constituency.

“On the need for us to have representation on the ticket of a new patriotic party for the Walewale constituency, that was the basis upon which we came out in the first place to participate in that contest.”

Dr. Kabiru elaborated on the importance of engaging with the people, particularly in light of the poll ruling that declared his mandate invalid. Dr. Kabiru recognized that this was a moment that called for further engagement with the people of the constituency, particularly to communicate the outcome of the court’s decision and to chart the way forward.

Dr. Kabiru highlighted the significance of reconnecting with the community and gathering their input. He explained that the meeting was called to discuss the ruling and to listen to the concerns, frustrations, and suggestions of the people, particularly the youth and women of the constituency.

“There’s a need to engage the people again, to communicate to them that this is what the high court has stated in respect of my candidature, in respect of my election.”

The meeting, according to Dr. Kabiru, was a chance for the people to express their opinions and for him to gauge their perspectives on the next steps. He appreciated the feedback he received, which he described as an indication of the people’s desire for effective representation.

“So basically, this meeting was a meeting of the youth, women, delegates of the people of the Greater Walewale Constituency, and at the end of the day, I mean, the people have spoken, they have shared their opinion, they have shared their approach, their frustration and they have just given me an indication of the rule up upon which we should embark to ensure that the people of Walewale have effective representation.”

People’s Mandate and Reaffirmation

Despite the court ruling, Dr. Kabiru noted that the community remained firm in their belief that he was the rightful candidate. The people, according to him, expressed their unwavering support and their desire for him to contest the elections once more. This encouragement from the community formed a key part of his address.

“The people have so stated that we will need to have representation, and they are not backing down on their earlier stance. They are still of the view that I am the duly elected candidate, and they want to reaffirm that on the 8th of September.”

“They have encouraged me. They have asked me. They have directed me to pick the nomination form and to contest the elections again.”

Final Engagements and Decision-Making

While Dr. Kabiru expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the youth and women, he emphasized that the next steps would involve engaging other important stakeholders and elders within the community. He stated that their opinions would be factored into the final decision-making process before embarking on the next stage of the campaign.

“I have already told them that, aside from the youth and the women, there are also some stakeholders or important elders in this situation. That will be my last engagement.”

Dr. Kabiru assured the people that, after consolidating the views of all these stakeholders, a final decision would be made regarding his participation in the upcoming contest. However, he reiterated that the general sentiment from the community was in favor of moving forward with the campaign.

“…But the signal is that we must go ahead with the contest. We must be forthright in our participation.”

Dr. Kabiru addressed the need for transparency and fairness in the electoral process. Dr. Kabiru pointed out that, this would prevent unnecessary legal disputes after the election results are declared.

“We must ensure that this time around, the national executive or those going to organize the election must ensure that we have a very clean register. So that no one will run to court under the refuge of dead people in the name after the person has lost the elections.”
