In recent years, there has been a concerning trend emerging within the legal profession – the rise of unethical practices among legal practitioners. The concern is palpable as the number of lawyers being reported to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council (GLC) for misconduct continues to climb.

In a stark reminder of the challenges facing the legal profession, Justice Torkornoo, speaking at the 2024/2025 Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association, highlighted the disturbing rise in unethical practices among legal practitioners.

The esteemed Justice Torkornoo did not mince her words as she expressed her disappointment at the growing trend of lawyers engaging in unethical behavior that undermines the very foundation of the legal system.

She underscored the urgent need for a shift in professional attitudes, urging legal practitioners to embrace integrity as the cornerstone of their work

“It is disheartening to witness the increasing numbers of lawyers being referred to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council for unethical practices against their clients,” Justice Torkornoo lamented, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The legal profession has long been regarded as a noble and honorable vocation, one that demands the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism.

Lawyers are entrusted with upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, and are expected to act in the best interests of their clients and society as a whole.

However, the recent increase in unethical practices among legal practitioners threatens to erode the public’s trust in the legal system and compromise the integrity of the profession.

It is imperative that the legal profession takes a stand against these unethical practices and reaffirms its commitment to integrity, honesty, and professionalism. Legal practitioners must hold themselves to the highest ethical standards and act in the best interests of their clients and society.

Justice Torkornoo’s impassioned plea for a return to the core values of the legal profession resonated with many in attendance.

“There seems to be an unfortunate misconception that the practice of law is primarily a means to amass wealth quickly. However, as officers and guardians of the law, I implore lawyers to recognize the sacred nature of their role and refrain from treating the law as a mere tool for financial gain.”

In response to the escalating crisis of ethics within the legal profession, the Chief Justice announced a collaborative effort between the General Legal Council and the Council of Law Deans to integrate legal ethics into the law school curriculum.

This strategic initiative aims to instill a deeper sense of ethical responsibility and professional conduct among future lawyers, equipping them with the moral compass needed to navigate the complexities of legal practice with integrity and honor.

Justice Torkornoo’s call for a renewed commitment to ethical standards within the legal profession served as a timely reminder of the critical role that lawyers play as custodians of justice and upholders of the rule of law.

The erosion of ethical norms not only tarnishes the reputation of the legal profession but also undermines the very fabric of society, eroding trust in the legal system and jeopardizing the rights and interests of individuals seeking justice.

As legal practitioners, it is incumbent upon lawyers to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and to prioritize the interests of justice above personal gain. The legal profession is a noble calling that demands unwavering dedication to truth, fairness, and integrity.

The rising tide of unethical practices among legal practitioners is a cause for grave concern that demands immediate attention and concerted action.

Justice Torkornoo’s impassioned plea for a return to integrity within the legal profession serves as a clarion call for all lawyers to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and ethical conduct in their practice.

Only by embracing these values can lawyers fulfill their sacred duty as guardians of the law and champions of justice, ensuring that the legal profession remains a beacon of hope and a bastion of integrity in society.
