In a powerful statement, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament has called for change, urging Ghanaians to view the upcoming December 2024 general elections as a critical juncture for the country’s future.

Describing the election as a choice “between light and darkness,” he emphasized the significant stakes involved, framing the contest as an opportunity for the electorate to determine the direction of the country.

He highlighted the upcoming election as pivotal, giving citizens a chance to “reset the country onto a path of growth and prosperity for all citizens devoid of their background, political affiliations or social status.

“This December election presents a choice between light and darkness. It affords the good people of Ghana an opportunity to reset the country onto a path of growth and trusted leadership or upgrade misgovernance, harsh living conditions, greed, insecurity, lifeless economy, galamsey, LBGBT activism, hopelessness and increasing loss of trust in the public utterances of public officials”.

Leadership Accountability

The Speaker of Parliament expressed deep concern over the current state of leadership, criticizing the ruling government for failing to take responsibility for the country’s challenges.

According to him, effective leadership requires acknowledging the difficulties faced by ordinary Ghanaians, both at work and at home.

He asserted that leaders must not only admit their role in the current situation but also work hard to “fix the problems” plaguing the country, criticizing leaders who consistently deflect blame.

His statement is seen as a direct challenge to the ruling New Patriotic Party, whom the opposition National Democratic Congress has accused of refusing to take ownership of policy failures and mismanagement.

Call for Courage and Hope

Speaker Bagbin’s message carried a tone of urgency, as he urged Ghanaians to confront their fears and make a bold decision in December.

“I pray, we all have the courage to confront our fears and make a choice that will restore our country and make it the beacon of hope and growth in Africa again,” he said, signaling that the upcoming election is not just about partisan politics but about the restoration of national pride, progress, and dignity.

As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, Speaker Bagbin’s words add to the growing debate over the country’s future trajectory.

His remarks come at a time when many Ghanaians are grappling with economic hardship, including high unemployment, high inflation, and high cost of living, in addition to widespread disillusionment.

His call for voters to choose “light” over “darkness” underscores the widespread sentiment that the upcoming general election is a referendum on the direction of the country.

The election according to some political analysts is expected to centre on key issues such as economic recovery, governance reforms, the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), and addressing concerns over human rights and equality.

Speaker Bagbin’s remarks underline the gravity of the choices that lie ahead for Ghana. With a country standing at a crossroads, the December elections will undoubtedly shape the country’s future.

In light of Speaker Bagbin’s calls for courageous and responsible leadership, the challenge now falls on the electorate to decide which path the country will take, either towards renewed hope or deeper uncertainty.
