Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison, Member of Parliament for Agona West and Independent Candidate

The Member of Parliament for Agona West Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison has confirmed that she has officially filed to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

The announcement comes in the wake of several accusations and controversies following her loss in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

Hon.  Morrison, addressed these issues, emphasizing her decision to run independently and responding to allegations made against her. When asked to confirm rumors of her independent candidacy, Hon. Morrison stated: “Yes, and I filed already. I filed 3 days ago.“

This confirmation ends weeks of speculation about her political future, especially after she lost the NPP primaries.

Hon. Morrison acknowledged the party’s expectations that she would quietly step aside like other defeated candidates but made it clear that she had chosen to run independently, driven by her strong commitment to her constituency.

Hon. Morrison rejected the perception that her decision to run independently signifies ingratitude toward the NPP.

Critics have pointed out that she has held various influential positions within the party, including serving as the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection. Addressing these allegations, Hon. Morrison expressed deep disappointment.

“It’s quite sad, and it pains me to hear that… I am never an ungrateful person; I have served this party faithfully, even when we had no sitting MP in Agona West.”

Hon. Morrison also highlighted her hard work in Agona West, where she said she played an active role in advancing the party’s agenda and serving the people, even when the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) held the parliamentary seat.

Allegations of Corruption

A significant part of the conversation focused on accusations that Hon. Morrison had enriched herself during her time as the Gender Minister, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The claims include rumors that she personally profited from distributing relief items during the pandemic. Hon. Morrison vehemently denied these allegations.

“I am on national television, and I can tell you for a fact that, all the things that we distributed… I did not buy anything. I just distributed it. So, when I hear that, it pains me so much.”

Hon. Morrison, further explained that this false narrative had been used against her during the primaries and had affected her standing in her constituency.

Hon.  Morrison expressed her frustration over the treatment she has received from certain members of her party, particularly during the NPP primaries and subsequent campaign activities. She detailed an incident where at a market event she was allegedly subjected to public humiliation.

“My MCE stands on the stage to say that I have made money, and people will say I have stolen money… I reported a case where somebody had played a tape saying that I was owing 1,000,000 of money from gender.”

Hon.  Morrison explained how this smear campaign was perpetuated by her political opponents within the party, including individuals she had previously supported, such as her constituency’s parliamentary candidate.

Hon.  Morrison, went on to describe various acts of sabotage, including staged public insults and orchestrated rumors, which she claimed were intended to tarnish her reputation and remove her from the political scene.

Public Reaction and NDC’s Involvement

Interestingly, Hon. Morrison revealed that even members of the opposition NDC had capitalized on the negative propaganda against her.

“I met NDC, they were using my name to even sing a chant and took pictures with me, and they were just happy around me,’’ She stated.

Despite the overwhelming challenges and the deeply personal nature of the attacks against her, Hon. Morrison made it clear that she remains undeterred in her pursuit of serving the people of Agona West.

“Politics is not about only making money. Your dignity is very important. I couldn’t leave politics with that tainted image”, Hon. Mamle remarked.

Hon. Morrison, independent bid for parliament is not just a political move, but a stand against what she perceives as unjust treatment and false accusations.

As she prepares to contest in the upcoming election, her focus remains on her commitment to her constituents and her belief in maintaining integrity in public service.

Hon.  Morrison’s decision to run as an independent candidate reflects a deep frustration with the internal conflicts within her party and the false accusations that have marred her political career.

Hon. Morrison, candidacy will undoubtedly stir political dynamics in Agona West, and as the election approaches, it remains to be seen how her move will influence the larger political landscape.

Nevertheless, her commitment to maintaining her dignity and serving her constituents is evident in her continued fight against the allegations that have been leveled against her.
