The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure the electoral process is free, fair, and credible.

Speaking at a durbar of chiefs and residents of Axim, in the Western Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that a transparent electoral process is vital to preserving peace in the country. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the critical role of the EC in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.

“We cannot afford to compromise on the integrity of the electoral process. Peace is easier to sustain when the electoral process is open and transparent, and when credible elections are conducted.

“It is the responsibility of the Electoral Commission to ensure that the upcoming elections meet these standards.”

As the 2024 elections draw closer, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang appealed to the people of Axim and its traditional leadership to continue upholding peace and unity. She urged the residents to practice tolerance and mutual respect as the election season intensifies, stressing that peace is a collective responsibility.

During her speech, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed confidence in the ability of the NDC to secure the mandate of the people come December. She also encouraged the people of Axim to re-elect their current Member of Parliament (MP), Kofi Arkoe Nokoe, praising him for his dedication to the constituency.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted some of the projects undertaken by the previous NDC government in Axim, including the Axim Sea Defense Project and the asphalting of key roads in the town back in 2015. She also pointed out the establishment of Axim Girls Senior High School as a significant achievement of the party.

“The NDC has shown its commitment to the development of Axim through various projects, and I am confident that, given the opportunity, we will continue to serve the people’s interests,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pledged that an NDC government would work to restore the Axim mini harbour project to its original blueprint. The project, which was initiated during the NDC’s time in office, has been a point of concern for locals following delays and alterations under subsequent governments.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang lauded the efforts of the traditional authorities in Axim for their role in promoting development and fostering unity in the region.

“However, we must remain united and committed to ensuring that the upcoming elections are peaceful, and that development remains a top priority for our leaders.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also called on the chiefs to actively lend their voices in advocating for electoral integrity. She emphasized that the traditional leaders’ influence in their communities could help ensure that the Electoral Commission remains accountable and transparent throughout the electoral process.

A significant portion of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s address was dedicated to the youth of Axim and the broader Western Region. She called on young people to avoid becoming instruments of violence during the election period, reminding them of the importance of preserving peace and stability.

“I urge you to resist being used in this manner. Ghana’s peace and future are far more important than any individual’s political gain. The NDC is committed to peaceful elections, and we count on your support to uphold this principle.”

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s call for transparency, peace, and development echoes the sentiments of many Ghanaians who are looking forward to a peaceful and credible election.

Her message highlighted the importance of unity, tolerance, and a commitment to development, especially in the face of a crucial election period. The NDC running mate’s confidence in her party’s track record and her appeal for peaceful elections set the tone for the months leading up to December, when Ghanaians will once again head to the polls to elect their leaders.
