The founder and leader of the Movement for Change (MFC), Alan John Kyerematen, has outlined a unique vision for leadership, describing his aspiration to become a “transitional president.”

Hon. Kyeremanteng emphasized the importance of youth in shaping Ghana’s future and their centrality in the country’s development agenda. Hon. Kyerematen’s leadership approach combines modern political strategies with a deep commitment to traditional values, believing it is the responsibility of political leaders to chart a path forward for the younger generation. Hon. Kyerematen made a compelling case for focusing on youth development by citing voter statistics from the 2020 general election. According to him, 10 million out of the 17 million registered voters were aged between 18 and 35.

This data, he believes, illustrates the urgency for leaders to prioritize the younger generation in their policies and governance strategies. He extends this demographic projection to include those up to 45 years old, arguing that “maybe 30,000,000 out of the 17,000,000” would fall within this age bracket, underscoring the significant influence the youth have in Ghana’s electoral and developmental landscape.

“For any serious forward-looking politician to appreciate the fact that we need to get the youth at the center of our development agenda. The future belongs to them.”

Alan John Kyerematen the founder and leader of the Movement for Change (MFC)

Hon. Kyerematen’s focus on the youth is further reflected in his decision to choose a young vice-presidential candidate. In his view, selecting a young, dynamic individual for this position demonstrates his dedication to empowering the next generation of leaders.

“I made a public commitment to make sure that I pick a demonstrably young person… because I can say I’m a young person, but [I chose] a demonstrably young person.”

Alan John Kyerematen the founder and leader of the Movement for Change (MFC)

Hon. Kyeremanteng’s chosen running mate, referred to simply as “Code,” is described as a multifaceted individual who brings a range of skills to the ticket. Code is a corporate lawyer, corporate executive, broadcast journalist, and political activist. According to Hon. Kyerematen, his running mate’s diverse background reflects the type of young leader Ghana needs – someone who can contribute to various strategic interests.

Rethinking Economic Management Structures

When questioned about his vice president’s lack of expertise in economic management. Instead, he envisioned a different structure for economic governance, one that does not follow the conventional model of a political figure leading the nation’s economic planning. He emphasized the importance of independent expertise over political appointees in steering the country’s economic affairs.

“There is no constitutional requirement for the establishment of an economic management team it is nowhere in our constitution that any government that any government should have an economic management team and in that regard a team chaired by the vice president. There have been various forms and structures of economic planning and management in different governments.”

Alan John Kyerematen the founder and leader of the Movement for Change (MFC)

Hon. Kyerematen proposed forming an independent body comprised of individuals with proven track records in economic management. These experts would provide objective advice and guidance to the government, ensuring that the country’s economic policies are based on sound analysis rather than political motivations. He stressed that these advisors would have the capacity to challenge the government when necessary, adding value to decision-making processes. He pointed out that; “What you need is an independent body of people who have the expertise and the proven track record in economic management, they don’t necessarily need to be politicians.”

A Government of National Unity

A major theme in Hon. Kyerematen’s leadership vision is his commitment to establishing a government of national unity. He advocated for a political dispensation where individuals from various professional backgrounds contribute to national governance. He reiterated; “Why should we have our most talented brains in Ghana outside the scope of government just because they are not politicians? For me, it doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t add up”

Hon. Kyerematen’s government would therefore not be limited to political appointees. Instead, it would be a blend of independent experts and strategic political figures, each chosen for their specific skills and expertise rather than their political affiliations. This model, he believes, will foster a more efficient and effective government that can respond to Ghana’s challenges with a broader range of perspectives and solutions.

Meanwhile many are concerned about Abu Sankara Hon. Alan’ friend take on his decision, Hon. kyeremanteng highlighted that he is a good friend of his and then acknowledged the negative Challenges within Political the landscape using the New Patriotic Party NPP as a point of reference. Instead, it is a strategic decision that reflects the need for a new kind of leadership in Ghana. However, Hon. Kyerematen is firm in his belief that the vice president’s role should not be limited to economic management but should include broader strategic contributions to the country’s development. He noted; “I would pick a vice president for strategic reasons, not necessarily related to economic management and planning.”

Hon. Kyerematen pointed out the negative propaganda surrounding vice-presidential candidates in Ghanaian politics, noting that the choice of running mate is often misunderstood or criticized. He believes that his decision to select a young leader like Code will not only strengthen his ticket but also offer the country a fresh perspective on governance. In alignment with his broader political strategy, Hon. Kyerematen’s Movement for Change has allied with other political entities, creating the “Alliance for Revolutionary Change.” This coalition, he believes, will usher in a new political era in Ghana, one that values unity, inclusivity, and strategic leadership.

Hon. Kyerematen’s vision, if realized, promises to reshape Ghana’s political landscape by placing the youth at the center of national development and bringing together the country’s brightest minds, regardless of political affiliation, to form a government of national unity.
